3 Supplemental Instruction (SI)
proven comprehensive form of on-going student support puts in to place the structure of a successful-student practice, group study “Students who study together learn two and a half times as much in the same amount of time as students who study alone.” Johnson, R. Psychological Bulletin, 89, 47 – 62. In developing the program, Dr. Martin surveyed “successful” students (medical, pre-law) to find out what they did. Group Study. Johnson and Johnson study  important qualifier So long as the group stays on task.

4 Student participation is voluntary
SI Leader, a model student, facilitates out-of-class review sessions that incorporates what to learn (course content) with how to learn it (study skills). Student participation is voluntary Historical and in-house data suggests that students who participate in SI have higher success and retention rates. SI models that typical successful student habit (group study) by putting into place the study group and then ensures its productiveness by providing an SIL

SI success 74% NonSI success 48% 28% 11% I took over the coordination of SJC SI program at the end of the Spring 2009 semester. Unfortunately, the first semester we have data for SJC is Spring 2009. MVC section total, SJC – 9 sections Participation rate higher at MVC (attribute to longer standing program) ARCC Indicators: “Successful Completion” and “Persistance Rate” Census Enrollment: SI Group: 755 (49%) Student Contact: Hours SI GPA: Non SI GPA: 2.00
