1 Cell Organelles

2 What is a Cell? A cell is the smallest unit that is capable of performing life functions.

3 Examples of Cells Amoeba Proteus Plant Stem Bacteria Red Blood Cell
Nerve Cell

4 Animal Cell

5 Plant Cell

6 Cell Theory All living things are made up of cells.
Cells are the smallest working units of all living things. All cells come from preexisting cells through cell division.

7 Prokaryotic Eukaryotic
Two Types of Cells Prokaryotic Eukaryotic

8 Prokaryotic Do not have structures surrounded by membranes
Few internal structures One-celled organisms, Bacteria

9 Eukaryotic Contain organelles surrounded by membranes
Most living organisms Plant Animal

10 tiny structures that carry out specific functions in a cell
Organelle- tiny structures that carry out specific functions in a cell

11 Surrounding the Cell

12 Cell Membrane Outer layer of cell that controls movement in and out of the cell Double layer

13 Talk about it… What type of things do you think the cell would want to let in? Let out? What types of things would a cell want to make sure doesn’t get into or out of the cell? Every cell has a cell membrane. Why do you think this is? Why can’t cells live without it?

14 Cell Wall Most commonly found in plant cells & bacteria
Supports & protects cells

15 Talk about it… Animal cells lack a cell wall. Why do you think they don’t need a cell wall?

16 Inside the Cell

17 Nucleus Directs cell activities
Separated from cytoplasm by nuclear membrane Contains genetic material - DNA

18 Talk about it… Prokaryotic cells like bacteria do not have a nucleus. How do you think they live without it?

19 Mitochondria Bean shaped organelle, surrounded by two membranes
Produces energy through chemical reactions – breaking down fats & carbohydrates Recycles and decomposes proteins, fats, and carbohydrates

20 Talk about it… Mitochondria take in sugar and oxygen and make carbon dioxide and water. Why go to this trouble? What would the cell get out of it?

21 Chloroplast Usually found in plant cells Contains green chlorophyll
Where photosynthesis takes place

22 Talk about it… There are many more organelles in a cell. Pick two and based on the structure of each, propose a function that it could provide to the cell to help it live

23 How complex cells evolved
