1 By William Shakespeare
JULIUS CAESAR By William Shakespeare

2 About thee Author…. Known as the world’s greatest playwright and poet.
Has more written about him than any other writer in the world. Was not much written about him in his time, the 1600s

3 The BIO of Shakespeare…
There is written record of Shakespeare being baptized on April 26th, 1564. There is no written proof of Shakespeare being born on the 23rd, but baptism usually happened around 3 days after birth and this was the closest time to do the baptism. Sooo we assume he was born on the 23rd. Shakespeare died on the day he was born, April 23rd 1616 He was one of eight children Went to grammar school

4 Shakespeare got married and had three children
Little is known about Shakespeare between his children’s birth (1585) and 1592 when people begin writing about him again…

5 He comes back in Other playwrights were writing about Shakespeare and his talent… Shakespeare was originally an actor Being an actor was frowned upon They were lumped in the same category as vagabonds and beggars Plays were considered a waste of time (because they were during the day) and a place were disease spread. Theaters were closed for long periods of time during the plague.

6 In 1603 the Shakespeare joined “King’s Men” a theater company
He acted and wrote for this company until he retired in 1612 By that time he had written 37 plays Comedies, histories, tragedies, romances All of this original copies were bought out in 1623 The collection was called the “First Folio” He died in April 23,1616

7 Elizabethan Theatre Done in courtyards of inns
People stood around 3 sides Some benches were in front for those to sit Think where the pool is at a motel… that is where the plays took place In 1576, James Burbage decided to build the first permanent theater house He called it “The Theater”

8 Eventually Burbage got it money trouble (1599)
The man that was renting Burbage the land said he was going to take it over Not wanting their theater taken over or torn down the that night members of the company took the Theater down piece by piece They rowed the pieces of the theater across the river piece by piece They reconstructed it It was now called “The Globe” This is where Shakespeare had his greatest plays performed.

9 The Globe was a circular building with an opening in the top
Plays were only done during the day so they used sun light as their light source It was not elaborate, consisting of a stage and one balcony area, called the heavens There were three tiers of seats There was also a standing area directly in front of the stage, where a crowd could literally look up at the actors. The setting of a play was very social There was drinking, eating, and socializing while the play was going on. It was very hard for a playwright to keep the attention of the audience.

10 The End of the Globe During a battle scene of Henry VIII a stagehand was lighting the fuse of a cannon A spark flew up and started a fire in the thatched roof of the Globe. The Theatre burned down.

11 This is how a drawing done in the 17th century shows the Globe
This is how a drawing done in the 17th century shows the Globe. It had to be recreated. This is what the reconstructed inside of the Globe looks like. The stage is directly in between the two heads. This is how we envisioned the reconstruction of the Globe in 1996.

12 The plays themselves There were no elaborate settings= imagination did that Costumes were very elaborate and ornamented. Only men were allowed to be actors Choir boys were used, and wigs, and makeup, and elaborate dresses.

13 Historical Play- Julius Caesar
Based on the assassination of a public figure About a Roman General who lived and died nearly 2000 years ago. Shakespeare drew his material from an ancient biographical text from the time. It is based on the fact that generals did not answer to a higher up, like a president today. At any time a general could “turn on another” This is what happened when Caesar and Pompey clashed in the civil war that began in 49 B.C.

14 Caesar and Pompey Caesar and Pompey were friends
Pompey married Caesar’s daughter by his first wife In 60 B.C. Caesar, Pompey, and Crassus helped a weakened government by establishing a triumvirate. Eager for more power, and knowing he could only have it with conquests and money, he traveled around Europe for 8 years fighting France, Belgium, Holland, etc. He got huge sums of money He went back to Rome assuming this would make him popular with the people

15 Caesar now had power and money Pompey was jealous
He went to the Senate and they agreed People said Caesar got support with bribes and handouts and that he was depriving Rome of their liberty. Caesar refused the Senate’s plea to become a private Roman citizen Instead he took his army to Rome and gained control Pompey retreated to Egypt He was murdered before Caesar could capture him

16 Caesar stayed in Egypt for 9 months
He was bewitched by Cleopatra He established her on the thrown of Egypt Then he went to Spain and defeated Pompey’s son’s army When he went back to Rome he was considered a god. He was declared dictator for 10 years He put Brutus on the Senate beneath him Caesar now felt he was on top of the world

17 Caesar’s obsession with power became out of control
He built a statue of himself It said “To the Unconquerable God” The common people loved him He was later declared dictator for life Many government members hated his actions The last time they had a king was 450 years ago They now had a republican government and could not bear the thought of Caesar becoming a King This is where Julius Caesar by Shakespeare starts, with senators making plans to assassinate him.
