Utopia: a place, state, or condition that is ideally perfect in respect of politics, laws, customs, and conditions Dystopia: a futuristic, imagined universe in which oppressive societal control and the illusion of a perfect society are maintained through control… make an exaggerated worst-case scenario about a current trend, societal norm, or political system

Let’s Review: THEME

What is COMMUNISM?

Partner Task: You will need access to the internet to complete this task. Work with a partner to answer questions 1-4. Hint: Amazon.com is a good place to find book reviews. 

What do you think? Read the questions presented to you on the “I Think” worksheet. Answer each question with your OWN honest opinion.

Activity: Writing about the growth of Communism, Rand writes in her foreword that “[t]those who want slavery should have the grace to name it by its proper name.” As this statement demonstrates, Rand’s philosophy is fiercely individualistic. As you read the novel, you will discover that Rand believes that every person should be primarily motivated by self-interest. From the foreword, you can see that she blames many of the world’s problems on excessive governmental control. Every color and object on a country’s flag has significance. The three colors on the French flag stand for liberty, equality, and brotherhood. The stars on the American flag stand for the individual states, while the stripes stand for the original thirteen colonies. Imagine the kind of country that Rand would establish. What would the flag look like? Using a piece of standard paper, make a flag for her country. Prepare a brief report (2-3 paragraphs) explaining the meaning of the colors and symbols you choose.
