1 Worcestershire 5G Testbed
Mark Stansfeld - Chair of Worcestershire Local Enterprise Partnership and 5G Lead for Midlands Engine

2 Our vision for a Connected County
“To build a connected, creative, dynamic economy that delivers increased prosperity for all those who choose to live, work, visit and invest in Worcestershire.”

3 Objectives for our 5GTT project
Worcestershire has been awarded £4.8million to provide: A quantified assessment of how Industry 4.0/Remote Manufacturing, made possible only by 5G, increases productivity in the areas of Preventative Maintenance, Use of Robotics and Assisted Maintenance using AR Cyber-security and spectrum resilience capabilities for 5G networks to ensure ‘security by design’ Cyber-security Test and Assurance Services for critical 5G applications to ensure ‘security by design’ An exploration of a new Business Model made possible by 5G, specifically the viability of selling time on a machine as opposed to requiring the capital purchase of the machine itself

6 Enabling Industry 4.0 through 5G
Preventative maintenance Robust measurements in place to monitor 3,865 units per annum 6,000 downtime incidents Helping to increase productivity target by 1% Machine Repair Augmented Reality Remote monitoring Assume 2 hours downtime instead of 2 days 0.54% productivity gain One use case UK-wide would generate a £6.5bn increase per annum ONS Manufacturing - The value of UK manufacturers’ product sales reached £364.7 billion in (UK Manufacturers’ Sales by Product (prodcom): provisional estimates, 2016, Provisional estimates of UK manufacturers' sales by product (Prodcom) for 2016) UK Manufacturing Statistics Manufacturing contributes £6.7tn to the global economy. Contrary to widespread perceptions, UK manufacturing is strong with the UK currently the world's ninth largest industrial nation. Manufacturing makes up 10% of GVA and 45% of UK exports, and directly employs 2.7 million people. Worcestershire GVA Average annual growth 3.2% GVA per capita up 19.2% to £20,387 still lower than £26,061 11,500 jobs 5.1% of Total;

7 New Business models through 5G
Servitisation Selling capacity iSmart Factory (4.0) Cloud software services Sensor Technology Data to cloud Support Model Remote diagnostics & performance enhancements Machine Productivity Predictive Maintenance Augmented Reality Remote Support 2 hours downtime instead of 2 days Enables SME productivity gains through increased capacity – one use case UK Wide £1.1bn ONS machinery equipment Market ONS turnover of SME’s in production Industry £221bn Mar 16 Assume capacity increase of 0.5%

8 5G must have “Security by Design”
Test, Assure, Design, Apply Resilience from Malicious attack Reduce downtime & data loss Cyber health check services Penetration & advanced intrusion testing Handover Scenarios 4-5G Integrity of service Robust in frequency bands QoS Network Slicing Multitude of Use Cases Different requirements on network High Level Throughput v’s Low latency Computing at the edge delivers low latency Qinetiq existing security as a service facility for 4G. Experienced in Cyber Security and RF trials. Sit on Spectrum policy forum with good links to ofcom. Previously conducted 700MHz trials. MOD spectrum Research Programs . Security 2.5% (5700) of jobs but key growth Sector Network slicing is expected to play a critical role in 5G networks because of the multitude of use cases and new services 5G will support. These new use cases and services will place different requirements on the network in terms of functionality, and will their performance requirements will vary enormously. For example, an autonomous car will rely on V2X (vehicle-to-anything) communication which requires low latency but not necessarily a high throughput. A streaming service watched while the car is in motion will require a high throughput and is susceptible to latency. Both would be able to be delivered over the same common physical network on virtual network slices, to optimise use of the physical network.

9 Key future milestones

10 Midlands Engine Opportunity to expand Opportunities
Extension of Worcestershire test bed – Industry 4.0 , vale chain, JLR etc Development of digital infrastructure with physical infrastructure - Midlands Connect, Road, Rail, Ports, Airports HS2 Phase 1 ground works starting now and architects in for development of stations in Solihull & Birmingham Innovation in Connected Autonomous vehicles – Coventry, Warwickshire Local Full fiber networks – consolidated approach Birmingham Common wealth games – digital showcase Birmingham City University – Rich Media Stadium (5G test Bed application) Smart City Applications

11 Worcestershire 5G Testbed
The Worcestershire 5G Testbed consortium is welcoming interest from the UK’s most innovative minds.
