Check which civilization is highlighted on your chart Move to the section of the classroom that matches that civilization Split into two groups per civilization (should be 3-4 people in each group at the end) Use the materials located within the folder to fill in your graphic organizer – you may work with your group members You will have 12 minutes at each station After you’ve filled in your whole chart, you will answer the 2 questions on the bottom

4 Notes 1.4 – Religion in Ancient Civilizations
What traits did most religions from ancient civilizations have in common? How were religion and government related in ancient civilizations? How did polytheistic religions conflict with monotheistic religions? How are ancient religions building blocks for modern religious beliefs?

5 Early Religions -Almost every early civilization developed a religion that was POLYTHEISTIC, meaning they believed in MORE THAN ONE GOD -Gods often tied to natural events ex. Sun god, Mother Goddess (fertility), etc

6 Early Religions Egypt – believed in many gods, people would have a good AFTERLIFE if they had done good deeds on earth Sumer – believed gods controlled nature, kept them happy by worshipping at ZIGGURATS, everyone had bad afterlife Indus – believed in many gods led by MOTHER GODDESS, considered some animals sacred China– believed in many gods, prayed to ANCESTORS for help on earth

7 Religion & Government THEOCRACY – gov’t run by religious leaders Many rulers got power through their religion/gods -EGYPT – pharaohs were considered gods on earth -SUMER – rulers were chief servants of god -CHINA – emperors have power b/c god wants them to *This is called MANDATE OF HEAVEN* THINK: How would it help a ruler to claim he/she got his/her power from a God?

8 Monotheism vs Polytheism
Monotheism = belief in one God Earliest monotheistic religion was JUDAISM (Jewish) -moved to Egypt b/c of famine, ENSLAVED Jews believe Moses led them out of Egypt with the help of their one God -Jewish god said to have sent PLAGUES to Egyptians and their gods ISRAEL SUMER EGYPT
