Kansas schools serve over 350,000 meals daily during the school year to serve more than 70 million meals during the SY.
In Summer 2017 over 1.4 million meals were served. While only 28,000 children statewide received the free meals provided each day by SFSP sponsors during the summer months.

Who Can Receive Meals?
All children ages 1-18 receive free meals
Children who turn 18 during the summer may continue to participate through the summer.
Persons 19 years of age and over with a physical or mental disability who participate during the school year in a public or private school program.
Children ages 1-18 – special permission must be obtained from the State Agency to serve meals to children under age 1. Keep in mind that this means teenagers who are bringing younger children to sites may also receive free meals.
Persons 18 years of age and over who has a mental or physical disability and who participates during the school year in a public or private school program (established for the mentally or physically disabled) is also able to receive meals.
Note: At an Open site, youth who are helping with the program may receive a free meal as any other participant; at closed enrolled sites, a student helper could not receive a free meal because they are not part of the “enrollment”.

Applications due May 1
All sites should be determined by May 1 and submitted for approval with the Sponsor Application on KN-CLAIM. (We want sites declared by May 1 – if there is some missing information on May 1, that is acceptable; but we want to know what sites you are working on.) Contact your consultant promptly when considering new sites to be sure they will be eligible under SFSP rules. A “Yes” response to item (58) on the site application indicates the site has been visited by the sponsor and is determined to meet the need for the SFSP.
New sites require an Initial Site Application located at Download or print, complete and send to KSDE. Once the Initial Site Application has been received, the consultant will create the site in KN-CLAIM and the sponsor will then confirm and add information in KN-CLAIM and submit it for approval. [If a site was previously used in SFSP, but was not an active site last year, the consultant can add the site at the request of the sponsor by making the site active from the Maintenance screen.]
A site must be in approved status prior to opening. All sites should be declared by May 1 so there is adequate time to review updates of information prior to operation.

Congratulations! Summer 2017 marked another record-setting year for the Summer Food Service Program in Kansas! Despite the continued growth each year, there is still much work to do in Kansas. Kansas schools serve 350,000 meals daily over 70 million meals during the SY. In Summer 2017 over 1.41 million meals were served, yet only 28,000 children statewide received the free meals provided daily by SFSP sponsors during the summer months. Kansas ranks 45th in the US for summer meals participation and growth.
The goal for summer 2018 is to increase meals served by 10% or exceed 1.5 million meals.
