Skeletal System EQ: What are the different types of bone located in your body?
2
Root Words
3
Types of Bone Long Bone Short Bone Flat Bone Irregular Bone
Sesamoid Bone
4
Components of Bones Bone is made mostly of collagen, a protein that is woven into a flexible framework. Bone also contains calcium phosphate and calcium carbonate, minerals that add strength and harden the framework. The combination of calcium and collagen gives the bone its strength and flexibility.
5
Long Bone Has long axes and expands at ends. Example : Humerus, Femur
6
Short Bone Cube-like bones with length and width roughly equal
Example: Wrist and Ankle
7
Flat Bone Plate-like structures with broad surfaces
Example: ribs, scapulae, some skull bones
8
Irregular Bones Variety of shapes and connected to several other bones
Example: Vertebrae and facial bones
9
Sesamoid Bone Small and nodular and embedded within tendons
Example: Kneecap (Patella)
10
Epiphysis Expanded portion at the end of a bone that articulates
11
Articular Cartilage Layer of cartilage that coats the Epiphysis that allows for cushion
12
Diaphysis Shaft of the bone, located between Epiphyses
13
Compact Bone Tightly packed tissue that lines the wall of Diaphysis
Provides strength and structure
14
Spongy Bone Composed of numerous branching plates, with spaces in between Reduces weight and provides flexibility Located mainly in Epiphysis
15
Medullary Cavity Space within the Diaphysis that holds the marrow and blood
16
Marrow Soft Connective tissue found in Medullary Cavity that produces Red blood cells
17
Humerus (Upper Arm Bone)
18
Radius and Ulna Radius on Top Ulna on Bottom
19
Carpals or (Wrist Bones)
20
Metacarpals (Top of Hands)
21
Phalanges (Little Fingers)
22
Ossification The formation of Bone tissue
23
Endochondral Bones Bones that develop during fetal stage
24
Draw and describe the following types of bones and tell where they are located Long Bone Short Bone Flat Bone Irregular Bone Sesamoid Bone
