DIRT Targets – 12C3 If your evaluation point has been highlighted it means that it is not sufficent, not relevant or incorrect. You need to re do it. Here are some tips on this: Use a direct criticism of the internal factor, rather than using an alternative factor. What doesn’t it show? What is the weakness in the explanation? Is there an example or explanation that disproves it? Make more of an explicit link between the internal and the external factor. How does the external factor directly challenge the internal factor? Try to use a positive evaluation point: what does the internal factor help show? How useful is it in the wider debate? Can it be criticised as not being useful to explain middle class high achievement and why? T1 – You need to refer to more Sociological studies in your work, pick out two additional Sociologists that you can refer to about any of the internal factors you have mentioned. T2 – You need to answer the question (ATQ) – add link points at the end of your paragraphs to show how each internal factor links into the question ‘middle class students high achievement due to inside school factors’. T3 – You need to develop or include an evaluative conclusion. You can discuss the following: which is the best internal factors to explain middle class high achievement and why? What outside factors might also contribute to the internal factors? Can gender, ethnicity, or government policies be interlinked to any of the internal factors? Are they more useful to explain middle class high achievement? Set your conclusion in the context of the wider debate. T4 – The main focus of the essay has to be on Internal Factors: you need to have four PEEEL paragraphs focussing on: labelling, self fulfilling prophecy, class identity in school, and subcultures. Complete any you have not done. T5 – Can you come up with a general list of criticisms / evaluation for each of the four factors: labelling, self fulfilling prophecy, class identity in school, and subcultures? Present this is a table format, then link to including them into your essay. T6 – You need to link the content of your paragraphs to explain how it affects middle class high achievement.

Can you use content from another topic of the course ? E.g. Policies, or Theories of Education. T1 – You need to refer to more Sociological Concepts and have 6 PEAH paragraphs in your work, pick out two additional Sociological key concepts from the mark scheme that you can refer and write additional PEAH paragraphs. A01 T2 – You need to answer the question (ATQ) – add link points at the end of your paragraphs that explain how each external factor effects achievement (Positive and Negative for Working Class and Middle Class). A02 T3 – You need to develop or include an evaluative conclusion. You can discuss the following: which is the best external factor to explain working class low achievement and why? What internal factors might also contribute to the external factors? Can gender, ethnicity, or government policies be interlinked to any of the external factors? Are they more useful to explain middle class high achievement? Set your conclusion in the context of the wider debate. A03 T4 – The main focus of the essay has to be on External Factors: you need to have at least six PEEEL paragraphs focussing on six areas identified in the ‘indicative content’ box on the mark scheme. Complete any you have not done. A01 T5 – Can you come up with a general list of criticisms / evaluation for each of the four factors you have identified? Present this is a table format, then link to including them into your essay. A03 (See Section 1 for further guidance on evaluation) T6 – You need to discuss external factors that cause working class underachievement and factors that cause middle class high achievement. Complete PEEEL paragraphs or counter-arguments for the areas that you have missed.
