1 Cell Membrane

2 Four Main Components of the Cell Membrane
Phospholipids- two layers of phospholipids, called the lipid bi-layer. Carbohydrates Proteins Cholesterol- in membrane to keep tails of phospholipids from sticking together

3 Four main components make up the cell membrane
Two rows of phospholipids called the lipid bilayer. Transport proteins Carbohydrate chain. Cholesterol

4 Phospholipids Has a “polar” head (it is hydrophilic-water loving or attracts water) which is a phosphate group Has “non-polar” tails (it is hydrophobic-water fearing or repels water) which are fatty acids Phospholipids are arranged tail-to-tail

5 Carbohydrates Used outside the cell to identify the cell, like a flag.
These “flags” also identify chemical signals. They are used to communicate.

6 Proteins There are many different types of proteins in the plasma membrane. Transport Proteins are used to transport nutrients across the lipid bilayer. These proteins move within the lipid bilayer but do not enter or leave it. They are fluid.

7 Cholesterol Located among the phospholipids Nonpolar
Prevents the fatty-acid tails of the phospholipid bilayer from sticking together, in turn, contributing to the FLUIDITY of the cell membrane

8 Fluid Mosaic Model
