6 Ten common problems 1-Floundering Trouble in starting and ending
Solution: Look critically at improvement plan Review the mission statement Determine the cause of holdup Each member write down the reasons and discuss it in next meeting. 2- Overbearing Participants Exert unusual amount of influence in the team Usually have position of authority or particular expertise Solution Reinforce the ground rules Talk to person off-line and ask for cooperation Enforce the importance of data & problem solving method

7 Ten common problems 3. Dominating Participants
Like to hear themselves talk, use overlong anecdotes and dominate the meeting. Members get discouraged and miss meeting SOLUTIONS Structure discussion on key issues for equal participation, talk to the offending person off- line Leader can become a gate-keeper 4. Reluctant Participants Shy or unsure of themselves Must be encouraged to contribute SOLUTION Divide the issue into individual assignments Leader should become a gatekeeper

8 Ten common problems 5. Unquestioned Acceptance of Opinions as Facts
Members assert personal beliefs with such confidence that other members think they are facts. SOLUTION Request data and apply problem solving method 6. Rush to Accomplish Pushed by two or more persons who are impatient for results Remind members that ground rules call for problem solving method or to confront the rusher off-line

Activity of guessing at a persons motives when he disagree or don’t understand his or her opinion or behavior SOLUTION Question whether opinion is based on data or not Find out the real meaning of the problem 8. Discounts and ‘Plops’ Members fail to give credit to another’s opinion Respond to statement as plops. Reinforce active listening as a team behavior Support the discounted member Talk offline with members who frequently discount

When members lose track of the meeting’s purpose Want to avoid sensitive topics Discussion go off in different directions SOLUTION Use written agenda with time estimates Writing meeting topic in a flip chart Redirect conversation back to main agenda 10. Feuding team members Feuds predate the team SOLUTIONS Get adversaries to discuss the issues off-line Encourage them to form some contact
