1 Preparation and Process
By: Sencerre Grant, Caleb Greer Mellando Ridgeway, Darius Johnson Objectives: Learning what research you’ll need to do, how to use a library to your advantage, and how to use and order information you’ve collected

2 Your Research Plan (Gathering Info & Analyzing and Evaluating
One good way to start is to combine things you already know about the topic you’re doing a speech on. Then you have to reassure your knowledge is correct by looking up information to back it up. Asking someone who has experience to help you out can reduce time of looking through different books and websites to a minimum. You should think about who you’re presenting to and organize information in way to fit them. How formal the presentation be, how much the audience knows about the subject your presentation is on, and ways to capture their interest are all important to the presentation. This is called Audience Analysis. After finding information, you need to analyze your sources and make sure they are credible, relate to the presentation, and will add to the speech. Audience Analysis: The Process by which a speaker considers the needs and expectation of the audience that will be listening to the Speech

3 Using the Library and Internet for your Project
There are 4 different shortcuts in the library: Using Reference Librarians to your advantage, calling in to a library to get information on what you’re speaking on, using Interlibrary loans for hard to find materials, and using online databases to find information is a quick manner. The internet is the most efficient way to find information but you have to look out for false information. Digital Card Catalogs in libraries also can be a help. They can help the user find information in a more timely manner. There are author cards, title cards, and subject cards available to make searching for books easier. Database: A simple collection of related information

4 Books, Other Ways to Find Information, and Periodicals
Finding information in books you need can be simplified by looking for 2 things: The The Table Of Contents and the Index. Periodicals are found online and give you links to different newspaper articles and similar information Other sources of information out there are: Almanacs, Atlases, Biographies, Encyclopedias, Quotation Collections, Government Publications, and News Sources Table of Contents: Outlines the General Plan Of a book, story, or article. Periodicals: Newspapers and magazine articles.

5 More Ways to Find Information
Almanac: Annual Publication that provides statistics and General Facts Atlas: Maps and Geographical Information Biography: Non-Fiction Text describing the life of someone Encyclopedia: A book that describes many subjects in an alphabetical manner Government Publications: Books and Pamphlets published by the government that covers topics on human endeavor News Sources: A daily article that says event that have happened recently

6 Taking Notes When taking Notes, you should write down more than you think you may need but not unnecessary information. Make sure your information helps your presentation and is not just there. A good way to organize information in an orderly fashion is using flash cards. This way, you can organize cards in a way that fits the order of your presentation. Make sure the cards have titles on each so you can differentiate them.

7 Quoting Materials & Avoiding Plagiarism
Plagiarism has to be avoided as it is illegal. One good way to stop this is by quoting your source if you cannot say your information in your own words. If information is common knowledge, however, it does not have to be credited Paraphrasing is NOT a good way to state information as it’s just saying someone else’s ideas or thoughts in different way Plagiarism: Imitating other people’s thoughts or ideas and passing them off as your own
