Diversity of Living Things: Dissection Unit
Welcome Back!! Diversity of Living Things: Dissection Unit
2
Standards: High School - Life Science 4-1: Natural Selection and Evolution Students will be able to observe common characteristics such as homologous structures among different classification of organisms. Students will be able to observe specific adaptations that increase an organism's chance of survival. Why we dissect in biology: Dissections are to be done with respect to observe the complexity of life & you will be able to: develop skills of observation and comparison, discover the shared and unique structures and processes of specific organisms develop a greater appreciation for the complexity of life Your lab grade is largely based on how well you preserve your specimen and document your observations - Purposefully destroying your lab specimen will result in a failing grade

HW to prepare for Dissection & Friday Quiz Check
Unit 8: Animal Diversity Read 23.2 Pages : *Make sure to review and pay attention to the phylogenetic tree: figure 23.7 on pg 703* Take chapter notes (bullet points, 1-3 important pieces of information per section/paragraph) Define the vocabulary listed in the title on page 699 (vertebrate, invertebrate, phylum, bilateral symmetry, radial symmetry, protostome, & deuterostome) & answer questions 1-5 on pg 704 Read pg of 23.4 (READ COMPLETELY as we are dissecting an annelid): Define segmentation & coelom & answer question #3 on page 715
4
Carlous Linneaus The National Science Foundation’s “Tree of Life” project estimates there are potentially 5-10 million species on this planet, yet only 2 million have been identified.
5
The genus Homo is a latin word meaning “man” or “human”, the species sapien is a latin word meaning “wise” NOTE: The scientific name can be abbreviated such as: H. sapiens The scientific name is written underlined: Homo sapiens or H. sapiens Or italicized: Genus: always capitalized & written first species: always lowercase & written second
6
As we go down each level, more and more organisms are removed:
Each level gets more and more specific
7
Taxonomy: Science of Classification
Common Name: Common Earthworm Scientific name: Lumbricus terrestris Domain: Eukaryota Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Annelida Class: Clitellata Order: Haplotaxida Family: Lumbricidae Genus: Lumbricus Species: terrestris
8
Practice Dichotomous Key & Classification!
9
In your journal: Document initial observations of jelly bean
Write out path followed from dichotomous key Write flavored determined Try the jelly bean, confirm or deny flavored determined
