4 Physical Characteristics
Mountains influence populations of people, where they settle, where they move and the climate.

5 Himalayan mountains The Himalayan mountains are some of the tallest mountains in the world. They created a natural barrier between India and the rest of Asia. How do you think the Himalayan mountains have effected the people of Asia throughout the Centuries?

6 Western and eastern Ghats
The Ghats are portions of the western and Eastern coasts of india that include hills, plains, and forests.

7 Mount Fuji Mount Fuji is Japan’s Highest mountain. It is an active volcano and has been worshipped as a sacred mountain throughout the centuries.

8 How do mountains influence climate?
In some areas, mountains block rain, so that one side of a mountain range may be rainy and the other side may be a desert.

9 Climate Southern and Eastern Asia have varied climatic regions.
These regions range from tropical wet, to humid continental.

10 Natural hazards of the region
#1 Monsoons- Strong winds that change the seasons in Southern Asia. Summer=Wet Winter = Dry

11 #2 Typhoons Typhoons- a mature tropical cyclone that develops in the western part of the North Pacific Ocean (Basically a hurricane, but in the Pacific Ocean rather than the Atlantic)

12 #3 Volcanic Eruptions Volcanic Eruptions

13 #4 Earthquakes Earthquakes- The tectonic plates are always slowly moving, but they get stuck at their edges due to friction. When the stress on the edge overcomes the friction, there is an earthquake that releases energy in waves that travel through the earth's crust and cause the shaking that we feel.

14 Influence of water Rivers, Seas, and Ocean Currents have a tremendous impact on agriculture, trade, and transportation.

15 Farmable Land There is an abundance of arable(farmable) land in this region of asia.

16 Loess A loosely compacted yellowish-gray deposit of windblown sediment of which extensive deposits occur, e.g., in eastern China and the American Midwest.

17 Plateau of Tibet The highest plateau in the world!

18 Gobi Desert The Gobi is a rain shadow desert formed by the Himalaya range blocking rain-carrying clouds from the Indian Ocean from reaching the Gobi territory. It covers part of Northern and Northwestern China as well as southern Mongolia.

19 Class Assignment What is Japan’s highest elevation?
What is the name of the loosely-compacted sediment that can be found in eastern China? What is arable land? In which regions can you find arable land? What are some geographic features that influence, trade, transportation, and agriculture? What are the four Natural Hazards that exist in this region? What is the name of the highest plateau in the world? In which Country are the Ghats?
