Adept (at) Means “skilled” or “good at something”
Adjective After many hours of practice, I was finally adept at juggling.

Insinuate Means “to suggest without actually saying” Verb
Insinuates, insinuated, insinuating The girl insinuated that she wanted him to ask her out by saying that she was bored and wanted to go see a movie.

Disheartened Means “discouraged about something” or “bummed out”
Adjective Though I was disheartened by the fact that I didn’t do well on the test, I was determined to do better next time.

Fruitless Means “unsuccessful” (as in an attempt at something)
Adjective Opposite: Fruitful (“successful”) After several fruitless attempts at finding a date, someone finally said yes to him.

Grammar Label and cross out prepositions. Underline subjects once and verbs twice. Label main verbs “MV” and helping verbs “HV” 1. You and I should go to the store and buy food for dinner. 2. In the afternoon, the boys and girls at the preschool did not take naps.

Hostile Means “unfriendly” or “aggressive”
Adjective (noun: hostility: “aggression”) He did not understand why the teacher was so hostile to him; he only asked how his day was going.

Inflict Means “to cause something unpleasant to happen to another person” Verb: Inflicts, inflicted, inflicting She was convinced that the dentist was inflicting unnecessary pain because she didn’t like her.

Sensory Details Add this to your story notes:
Sensory details are words and phrases that access specific senses: hearing, touch, taste, smell, sight “the rough sandpaper scraped his hand” (touch) “The scent of pineapple floated through the air” (smell) “The bright red door and chipped white paint on the old house” (sight) “The chorus of crickets sang” (hearing) Sensory details make writing more interesting and require the reader to participate in the story.

Mortify Means “to humiliate”
Verb: Ends in “y”, so must be changed: mortified, mortifies, mortifying “Mortified” is also an adjective I was mortified when I accidentally sent the text asking out the wrong person.

Procure Means “to get something through special effort”
Verb: Procured, procures, procuring After waiting in line for three hours, I finally procured an iPhone 9.

My cousin and one of her roommates with brown hair packed their things and moved into a larger apartment down the street. (4) 2. Virtual Means “Almost/pretty much the same thing” Adjective
Many people consider Chihuahuas virtual rodents.

Malicious Means “Intending to cause harm” Adjective
Someone started a malicious rumor that O’Neal was a Justin Bieber fan, when he is and always has been a One Direction man.

Vocabulary Review You have a quiz on Friday.
For the next five minutes, study all of your vocabulary (lists 1-4). Make sure you have all of the words from this week so far. (You should have eight.) If you aren’t using the time wisely, I will no longer provide opportunities for study during class time.

Wary (of) Adjective To be “wary of” something is to be “cautious about” or “suspicious of” You should always be wary of gas station sushi.

Wince Means “to pull/move away (because something hurts)”
Verb: Winced, winces, wincing The dog winced when the cat scratched him.
