A Roofer’s Guide to Sustainability
Getting the Jargon Right “The Yorkshire Independent Roof Training Group is pleased to acknowledge that the Roofers Guide to Sustainability Modular Programme has been developed and produced as a result of funding provided by CITB ConstructionSkills as part of their long term commitment to training and quality standards in the specialist roofing sector. This support is gratefully appreciated

Does all the jargon around sustainability confuse you? DECC MCS PV FIT EPC DEA GDA REAL

DECC www.decc.gov.uk Department of Energy and Climate Change
DECC has four key priorities 1 To save energy with the Green Deal and support vulnerable consumers 2 To deliver secure energy on the way to a low carbon energy future 3 To drive ambitious action on climate change at home and abroad 4 To manage our energy legacy responsibly and cost-effectively

MCS Microgeneration Certification Scheme
For Installers The MCS is an internationally recognised quality assurance scheme which demonstrates to your customers that your company is committed to meeting rigorous and tested standards. It was designed with input from installer and product representatives. Similar to the Gas Safe Register, the MCS gives you a mark of competency and demonstrates to your customers that you can install to the highest quality every time.

FIT Feed in Tariff The Feed-in Tariffs scheme was introduced on 1 April 2010, under the Energy Act 2008. Through the use of FITs, DECC hoped to encourage small-scale low-carbon electricity generation, particularly by organisations, businesses, communities and individuals that have not traditionally engaged in the electricity market. This allows many people to invest in small-scale low-carbon electricity, in return for a guaranteed payment from an electricity supplier of their choice for the electricity they generate and use as well as a guaranteed payment for unused surplus electricity they export back to the grid.

1 Electricity supplier pays for each unit generated
Photo-voltaic 3 Electricity supplier pays for energy sent to grid There are three financial benefits from FITs: Generation tariff – the electricity supplier of your choice will pay you for each unit (kilowatt) of electricity you generate Export tariff – if you generate electricity that you don not use yourself, you can export it back to the grid. You will be paid for exporting electricity as an additional payment (on top of the generation tariff) Energy bill savings – you won will not have to import as much electricity from your supplier because a proportion of what you use you will have generated yourself, you will see this impact on your electricity bill. Import electricity from grid when required 2 Electricity generated used in the home

EPC Energy Performance Certificate
Energy performance certificates are required for any home being bought, sold, or rented out These have recently been redesigned to promote the Green Deal Under the Green Deal, householders can get energy efficiency improvements to their homes without paying any upfront costs. They pay back the cost of the work over time using savings from their energy bills. The EPC shows the efficiency rating of the home, its environmental impact rating, and estimated energy use, costs and carbon dioxide emissions.
13
SAP The Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) is DECC's methodology for assessing and comparing the energy and environmental performance of dwellings. Its purpose is to provide accurate and reliable assessments of dwelling energy performances that are needed to underpin energy and environmental policy initiatives. SAP works by assessing how much energy a dwelling will consume and how much carbon dioxide (CO2 ) will be emitted in delivering a defined level of comfort and service provision, based on standardised occupancy conditions. This enables a like for like comparison of dwelling performance.
14
DEA Domestic Energy Assessors (DEAs) are trained and licensed to collect data about an existing domestic property such as dimensions, construction and services, in order to generate an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC)
15
GDA Green Deal Assessor
The Green Deal assessment is the gateway to the Green Deal, no one will be able to enter into a Green Deal plan without a qualifying assessment of the building and recommendations for measures that could improve the energy efficiency of their home. The assessment and accompanying advice must be carried out by a qualified and authorised Green Deal advisor. They will have a mixture of technical knowledge, practical competence and ‘soft’ skills to provide households and businesses with the advice they need to take informed decisions.

REAL Renewable Energy Assurance Limited
The Renewable Energy Assurance Ltd. (REAL) Consumer Code was set up by the Renewable Energy Association. Their aim is to guarantee a high quality experience for consumers wishing to buy or lease small-scale energy generation systems for their homes. The REAL logo is a sign that the company has agreed to abide by the high standards set out in our Consumer Code.
