Time Line:  the Dutch East India Company (VOC) set up a supply station at Cape Town 1670 – Dutch farmers began to claim land, expelling or enslaving the indigenous people such as the Khoiboi and the San. By the end of the 1700s 10,000+ white settlers were living in South Africa. The British seized Cape Town, and the Afrikaners began the 'Great Trek' to establish new settlements.  They came into conflict with the Zulus and other groups.

4 Dutch and British Conflict
diamonds were discovered. gold was discovered.     Anglo-Boer War: British and Dutch Afrikaners fight for control of South Africa. The British win. 1910, the separate colonies joined together under the Act of the Union, and the British handed the administration of the country over to the white locals.

5 Apartheid was the social and political policy of racial separation and discrimination enforced by white minority governments in South Africa from 1948 to 1994. 1913/14 -- The Mines and Works Act and the Land Act: blacks were prohibited from owning land anywhere but in 'native reserves'—(7 percent of the whole territory). Apartheid officially began in 1948  The Population Registration Act divided people into four groups Black, Colored, Indian or White. Interracial marriages were outlawed. Group Areas Act: Blacks were restricted from living in urban, industrial, and agricultural areas, reserving these areas only for the Whites. Those already living in these areas were forced to relocated.

6 Struggle to End Apartheid
1960 - Seventy black demonstrators killed at Sharpeville. ANC banned.  1961 - Mandela heads ANC's new military wing, which launches sabotage campaign.  1960s - International pressure against government begins, South Africa excluded from Olympic Games.  1964 - ANC leader Nelson Mandela sentenced to life imprisonment.  1976 - More than 600 killed in clashes between black protesters and security forces during uprising which starts in Soweto.  - Township revolt, state of emergency. 

7 The End of Apartheid 1989 - De Klerk becomes President, meets Mandela. Public facilities desegregated. 1990 - ANC unbanned, Mandela released after 27 years in prison. 1991 - De Klerk repeals remaining Apartheid laws, international sanctions lifted. 1994 ANC wins first non-racial elections. Mandela becomes president.
