In 2000 East Providence ranks 5th in population among Rhode Island's 39 cities and towns As of April 1, 2000, the city population was 48,688 This represented a -3.36% decrease (1,692 persons) from the 1990 population of 50,380 East Providence’s total population fell by 1,692 people (-3.4%) during the 1990’s. The loss of 4,296 White residents was partially offset by gains in the Asian & Pacific Islander (+288) and Black/African American (+252) communities. In 2000, White residents accounted for more than 86 percent of the local population, while 5 percent were Black/African American. 11/9/2018
