WHO ARE WE II? The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) is a major UK engineering institution Its activities encompass the whole materials cycle, from exploration and extraction, through characterisation, processing, forming, finishing and application, to product recycling and land reuse. It exists to promote and develop all aspects of materials science and engineering, geology, mining and associated technologies, Mineral and petroleum engineering and extraction metallurgy, as a leading authority in the worldwide materials and mining community.

02/10/2013 UK-SPEC The Engineering Council sets and maintains UK Standards for Professional Engineering Competence A – Knowledge and understanding B – Design and development of processes, systems, services and products C – Responsibility, management or leadership D – Communication and interpersonal skills E – Professional commitment The UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC) describes the value of becoming registered as an Engineering Technician (EngTech), Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng). It describes the requirements that have to be met in order to gain these qualifications, and gives examples of ways of doing this. UK-SPEC should enable individuals and employers to find out whether they or their staff can meet the requirements, and explains the steps necessary to achieve professional registration with the Engineering Council. Our registrants carry many responsibilities, including the need to observe a professional code of conduct. These are described here, together with advice on how to maintain registration. UK-SPEC is published by the Engineering Council on behalf of the UK engineering profession. The standard has been developed, and is regularly updated, by panels representing professional engineering institutions, employers and engineering educators. It was last reviewed in 2013 and the third edition was published in January There is a transition period of up to two years. From February 2016, all professional reviews will be conducted in line with this edition. Those currently working towards registration should consult their institution for advice. When printed this becomes an uncontrolled document. Please check on the Extranet that you have the most up to date version
