6 Gatwick Statistics Gatwick has 9 Noise Preferential Departure Routes.
Route 4 was introduced back in the 1960s and is 3 km wide. The Route handled over 37k departures in which is just under 40% of the total leaving Gatwick. This equates to an average of about 150 aircraft per day. The Route doesn’t operate when the wind blows from the east, which is about 30% of the time. The current average altitude of aircraft over Sidlow is between 5000 and 5500 feet and over Salfords is and 6000 feet.

8 Pre 2012 – Key points Pre Conventional Standard Instrument Departure (SID) in use. Conventional SID - not precise, reliant on ground based beacons. Many aircraft flying outside Route 4 even though they hadn’t been vectored. Public’s perception - shared spread of overflying with no one being particularly disadvantaged. Crispin Blunt didn’t receive any complaints!

10 The 2013 to May 2016 situation New technology for flight navigation PR-NAV1 (Precision Area Navigation) Sat Nav in the sky using way points CAA states that Route design was to replicate, as closely as possible, conventional SID, while at the same time not straying outside the blue 3km swath. It failed because the way points took aircraft on a more northerly direction outside Route 4 when turning through 180 degrees. Result - Communities were being over flown that had not previously been affected Plane Wrong formed and To70 appointed

12 Since May 2016 The radius fly by way point has been deliberately set to ensure a much earlier and tighter turn than previously, with the subsequent way points set along the centre line of Route 4 to minimise the risk of aircraft straying beyond its north edge. A 220 knot speed limit has been set to ensure aircraft fly a tighter turn. Aircraft navigation systems are set to fly over the centre line way points until they reach 4,000 feet where they can be vectored onto their destination route. Our communities broadly lie beneath the Route 4 centre line and so we are receiving much more overflying than before 2012, with aircraft often at a lower altitude.

13 The parish council’s OBJECTIVE
For route 4 operations to replicate the pre 2012 situation whilst keeping within the 3 km wide route path
