1. Distance Education & Growth at FCC: Collaboration for Student Success Using the OEI Ecosystem

2. Definitions (ACCJC Guide, 2017)
Distance Education: “…a formal interaction which uses one or more technologies to deliver instruction to students who are separated from the instructor and which supports regular and substantive interaction between the students and the instructor, either synchronously or asynchronously.”
Correspondence Education: “Interaction between the instructor and student is limited, is not regular and substantive, and is primarily initiated by the student.”

As you can see we have almost tripled the number of sections offered via DE. When compared to FCC total, online classes had lower success rate and lower retention rate (about 5-6%) which is in line with the state average. However GPA of online classes was comparable to FCC overall.
I believe we can address these gaps in success and retention with both professional development and additional student support, and the Office of Instruction is committed to closing these gaps.
