Civics – The study if duties and rights of Citizens

3. Rights, Duties, and Responsibilities
Rights – Life, Liberty, and Property Given to all human beings.
Duties – Actions that we are required to perform by law.
Responsibilities - Things we should do of our own free will.

4. Examples of Rights Examples of some rights are: Right to survive.
Right to be free.
Own things that are necessary.

5. Examples of Duties
Obey Laws (rules that allow people to live together peacefully.)
Tells people what is acceptable and what is not.
Maintains order, health, safety, and property.
Pay Taxes (Money used to keep government running.)
Pays government employees, defend the country, or help those in need.
Also pays for schools, police officers, firefighters, runs schools, and paves roads.

6. Examples of Duties Defend the Nation
U.S. Law requires most male citizens between the ages of to register with the Selective Services System (SSS) which keeps track of all males in this age span.
In the event of an extreme emergency the government may issue a draft or call for military service of men of this age.
Does not mean you will have to fight. Volunteers meet the needs of the armed forces yearly.

7. Examples of Duties Serve in Court
The U.S. Constitution guarantees anyone the right to a trial by jury (group of citizens evidence in a case and decide whether the accused is guilty.
Must be prepared to serve on a jury.
Accused also have the right to hear and present witnesses.
Witnesses must also show up if they are called to do so.

8. Examples of Duties Attend School
Free Public Elementary and Secondary Education
Most State Laws require to be in school between the ages of 7 through 16.
Taught knowledge and skills to become good citizens, solve problems in a thoughtful way, and form opinions.
Also prepares students for their work life to help keep the economy strong.

9. Examples of Responsibilities
Be an informed and Active Citizen
You are responsible for staying informed of government activity so you can voice your opinion.
Responsible for making sure government works properly and making your concerns known.
Responsible for Voting (Citizens of the age of 18 or older can vote.) and making sure they keep their word in office.

10. Examples of Responsibilities
Respect the Rights of Others
Treating each other politely and respectfully.
Society runs smoother when we respect one another’s rights.
Contribute to the Common Good
Responsible citizens show concern for others as well as for themselves.
Volunteering for causes to improve community life.
