1 Multidisciplinary Capstone Design:
Loading, Measurement, Control, and Test of a Journal Bearing Test Platform Problem The test rig we were presented with needs to be able to measure multiple quantities (oil flow, vibration, eccentricity, and displacement). The rig suffers from backlash in the EMA load profile. Commissioned by Dr. Jason Kolodziej. MSD I Problem Definition System Design Subsystem Design Detailed Design Project Readiness Package MSD II Build Test Prep Integrated System build and test Customer Demo Customer Handoff Final Documentation Project Timeline Concept Generation Final Design Model Customer Requirements Morphological charts were used in order to assist brainstorming by means of organizing visual concept ideas. Key requirements the customer expects to be produced as an end result of the project. Concept Selection Pugh Charts were used to assist in comparing overall effectiveness of ideas based off of aspects such as cost, feasibility and chance of success. Functional Decomposition Steps in order to achieve the customer and engineering requirements. Spring/Preloading System Completed concept for eliminating the backlash in the system. Risk Assessment Measures the importance of risks associated with design based on likelihood and severity. Priority was given to the most important risks. System Architecture An easy to follow guide on how the subsystems of the rig interact with each other. EMA Joint Redesign Simplified previous joint design to two mating faces. Final Load Profile Shows results of a sinusoidal load profile after anti-backlash implementation. Oil Flow Results Accelerometer Calibration Can the oil flow rate be improved by reducing the journal shaft diameter? Can the accelerometers accurately measure the vibration on the test rig? Acknowledgments: Team P16453 would like to express our most sincere gratitude to Dr. Jason Kolodzeij and William Nowak for their guidance and support throughout the design and building phase. We also acknowledge the RIT Machine Shop staff with special thanks to Robert Kraynik and Jan Maneti for their constant assistance and input throughout the build phase of this project. Team Members : John Dolan (ME), Shay Stannistreet (ME), Anthony Miuccio (ME), Kris Kidder (ME) Faculty Guide : William Nowak & Jason Kolodziej Customer: Jason Kolodziej
