TITLE: Case study of a UK climate hazard – Drought.
Aim: Case study investigation of – the causes of drought in the UK, the pattern of drought regions, the impact (SEE) of the drought and the responses to the drought hazard – short term and long term.
2
Drought can occur anywhere in the world and the UK is no exception.
3
You could divide the tasks –
Independent study. Use your devices to research and complete the UK drought case study sheet. You could divide the tasks – One person: Research a UK drought event – when, where, how bad? Other person: Research SEE impacts. You will have to share your findings. How they present their information is optional
4
The impacts of drought. Drought in the UK will NOT kill people. People DO NOT go thirsty. Rather drought is an inconvenience and will have impacts socially, economically and environmentally. (Socially) Water restrictions are put in place – on car washes, golf courses, garden hose pipe bans (Economically) Agriculture is affected, especially dairy, fruit and vegetable production. (Environmentally) High temperatures cause evaporation of water in dams and reservoirs. This impacts flora and fauna.
5
Short term (immediate) responses
Responding to drought. How can the hazard of drought be managed? Short term (immediate) responses Long term responses Examples:

Short term (immediate) responses
Long term responses Examples: - Hose pipe bans General water restrictions Educate people on how to save water – variety of actions. Use ‘grey’ water Build more dams & reservoirs Build desalination plants Install water meters in all homes Responding to drought. Short term responses are less sustainable because …. Long term responses are more sustainable because –

News article – April 2011 Can you guess where it is happening?
Thames Water opened the UK’s first desalination plant to supply London with drinking water.

Question. Name a climatic hazard in the UK
Question. Name a climatic hazard in the UK. Explain the natural processes causing the hazard and evaluate the success of the actions taken to manage this hazard. Task: Write an essay plan for this question.
