1 4th Grade “The Transition”

2 What is “The Transition?”
4th graders are no longer primary students. By 4th grade, students should have the basic skills they need to work more independently and use higher-level thinking skills.

3 A puzzling phenomenon often occurs at around age 9 or 10 for many children: Students who were previously doing well in school see their performance dip.

4 WHY??? Students are no longer learning HOW to read, they are reading to LEARN. If they are still struggling to sound out words, little focus is on understanding. Students are no longer learning arithmetic. They are using these math facts in multi-step problems. The rise of peer influence/change in social life. Increasing accountability.

5 What Teachers Do To Help:
We have clear expectations. The Thirteen to Thrive We reward positive choices. End of the quarter celebrations, compliment jar, Rock Eagle We highlight missing homework in yellow in addition to signing the agenda after every class. We update the website regularly. We allow students to correct tests/quizzes to earn back some points.

6 What Can Parents Do To Help:
Make sure your children know their basic math facts by heart. Read with your child regularly. Check the student agenda every night. Make sure your children are in school (on time!) every day.  Take advantage of the 4th Grade website: NLAEGrade4.weebly.com

7 Other Important Bits of Information
Most work/learning is done IN CLASS, homework is only practice. Projects are done in class. Get-to-50 began this week Literature Circles begin next week. Literature Circles = book clubs
