1 ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES Economic activities are classified into three main sectors: primary, secondary and tertiary.

2 PRIMARY SECTOR

3 1. AGRICULTURE Agriculture obtains fruit, vegetal, and cereal products from the earth for people or industry.

4 FARMING SYSTEMS BASING ON THE WAY TO FARM
BASING ON THE USE OF WATER BASING OF THE USE OF SOIL BASING ON THE VARIETY OF SPECIES

5 BASING ON THE USE OF WATER
A. IRRIGATED AGRICULTURE Crops receive water from artificial irrigation systems. Common in: fruit trees, cotton, breetroot adn vegetables.

6

7 BASING ON THE USE OF WATER
B. RAIN-FED AGRICULTURE Crops just receive water from rainfall. Used for cereals (wheat, barley, rye), pulses (lentils, soya) vines, olive trees and sunflowers.

8

9

10 BASING ON THE USE OF SOIL
A. INTENSIVE AGRICULTURE High investment in capital machinery, seeds and fertilisers to get maximun yield. 2 types: High productivity intensive agriculture Low productivity intensive agriculture

11 A. INTENSIVE AGRICULTURE
High productivity intensive agriculture Very few people work, but needs high investment. Common for crops with commercial purposes: Garden produce Greenhouse (under plastic)

12

13

14 A. INTENSIVE AGRICULTURE
Low productivity intensive agriculture Many people working, but no money is invested Best example: Asian paddies

15 B. EXTENSIVE AGRICULTURE
It does not use all the resoures ro obtain the maximun yield. The more land is cultivated, the more yield they have. 2 types: High productivity extensive agriculture Low productivity extensive agriculture

16 B. EXTENSIVE AGRICULTURE
HIGH PRODUCTIVITY EXTENSIVE AGRICULTURE Importance of technology. Common in large cereal fields of USA.

17 B. EXTENSIVE AGRICULTURE
LOW PRODUCTIVITY EXTENSIVE AGRICULTURE Techniques are basic Usual in non-developed areas

18 BASING ON THE VARIETY OF SPECIES
MONOCULTURE: just one species POLYCULTURE: several species are grown in the same area.

19 LIVESTOCK FARMING It is the farming that obtains different products from animals (eggs, wool milk, meat, etc) Types: Cattle Sheep/coat Rabbits Horses Poultry (chickens, ducks, turkeys, etc)

20 Deppending on the capital investment
EXTENSIVE LIVESTOCK: Low investment Productivity low

21 Deppending on the capital investment
INTENSIVE LIVESTOCK: High investment High productivity

22 Deppending on feeding methods
GRAZING LIVESTOCK: grass CONFINED LIVESTOCK: feed SEMI CONFINED: summer: grass; winter: feed.

23 Deppending on mobility
Nomadic

24 Deppending on mobility
TRANSHUMANCE

25 Deppending on mobility
SEDENTARY

26 FOREST EXPLOITATION The utilitation of forest products: resin, cork, timber, etc A. TIMBER: furnitures, planks, etc.

27 B. CORK: bottle corks, insulating board.

28 C. RESIN: chemical products.

29 FISHING It is the practice of catching fish and other marine species for food or as raw materials for industry.

30 Two types of fishing Coastal fishing.
It is done near the coast (on the continental shelf) during one or several days. Boats that follow this type are small and techniques are artisanal. Off-shore fishing and deep sea fishing. It is done in deep sea areas during several weeks (off-shore) or months (deep sea). Boats are large and there are also freezer factory ships

31 LONGLINE FISHING

32 Techniques for fishing:
TRAWLING LIFT NETTING AQUACULTURE
