1 Chapter 15 Waves Mrs. T.

2 Section 1:What are Waves?
Disturbances that transfers energy from place to place Energy- ability to do work

3 What Carries Waves? Most waves need something to travel through.
MEDIUM- the matter through which wave travels through Types of MEDIUMS: GASES (air) LIQUIDS (water) SOLIDS (rope) Waves that require a medium are MECHANICAL WAVES Waves that do not require a medium are ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES. (light)

4 How do Waves Transfer Energy?
Energy travels through the medium, the medium does not travel with the energy Notice that the duck does not move with the wave. When energy enters a medium the energy is transferred to the medium’s particles. The energy is transferred as the particles vibrate against each other

5 What Causes Mechanical Waves?
ENERGY!!!!!!!!!! Mechanical waves are produced when a source of energy causes a medium to vibrate VIBRATION is repeated back and forth or up and down motion Click to see Animation!

6 Types of Waves 2 TYPES OF MECHANICAL WAVES (Classified according to how they move) 1. TRANSVERSE WAVES: Move medium at right angles 2. LONGITUDINAL WAVES: Move the medium parallel to the direction in which the wave travels.

7 Parts of Mechanical Waves
TRANSVERSE WAVE ANATOMY High point low point

8 Parts of Mechanical Waves
LONGITUDINAL WAVE ANATOMY:

9 Answer these Questions:
What are waves? What is a MEDIUM? Name 3 types of mediums. Name the 2 types of waves that exist. Describe how waves transfer energy. What causes mechanical waves? Name the 2 types of mechanical waves and describe their differences. Draw models of the 2 types of mechanical waves and label their parts.
