A basic tutorial

What we will do Import Data from Excel Basic statistics
Plots (box and scatter) Capability Analysis

About the data The data represents
Time to complete the project (this is a y variable- a measure of performance). The maximum (USL) is 30. Work effort to complete the project (this is a y variable – a measure of performance) The maximum (USL) is 600 Two “teams” that performed the project (these are x variables – inputs) These are categorical variables The complexity of the project - an index based on the number of tasks and how complex they are for this project (it’s a type of input, a descriptive input, so an x variable).

Importing from Excel Open Excel and Minitab
Go to the Minitabdata15 Excel file. Go to sheet data3 Select the data including the headers in Excel. Click on Copy. Paste in Minitab

This is Minitab Click here before pasting

Data is now in Minitab

Basic Statistics Determine the mean, standard deviation and other statistics for our y variables Main menu: Stat

Basic Statistics This form will appear Click on Work Effort

Basic Statistics Now the Work Effort will appear Then click OK

Basic Statistics The statistics will appear in the top window (called Session)

Basic Statistics We can also get the statistics for a variable based on a categorical group. For example, by the programming group. Go back to Stat, Basic …., Display … For Variables select Time, for By Variable select Prog. Group Then click OK

Basic Statistics Separate statistics for each group

Boxplots Go to Graph, then Boxplot

Boxplots Select Work Effort Then OK

Boxplots This will appear
The information will appear if you pass the cursor over the box

Boxplots Repeat but with Groups

Boxplots Select as below Hit OK

Boxplots

Scatterplot Graph …. Scatterplot Select

Scatterplots

Capability Analysis Stat,… Quality Tools, … Capability Analysis, …. Normal

Capability Analysis Fill out as below
