FTP is the name of the application and the protocol used for moving files between two hosts on a TCP/IP network.
FTP is built on a client-server architecture and utilizes separate control and data connections between the client and server applications. 
FTP can be used with user-based password authentication or with anonymous user access.
Typically, webmasters publish their newly created website files by sending them to the server using FTP. It is also possible to use FTP to get the files from the server.
