1800’s Pre-Industrial Era 1800-1850
Ancient Greek practice of bleeding and purging still practiced. Surgery w/o anesthesia. Health quackery thrives as American expands west. 1837 – Horace Mann, Secretary of the US Board of Ed. advocated for physical strength and health for all school kids. 1837 – Public Health recognized as needed for sanitation problems Harvard offers course in Hygiene – it consists of 5 lectures

Established Boards of Health Collection of Vital Statistics Inclusion of preventive medicine Warnings about tobacco, alcohol, spoiled food and false cures Health education in schools

Modern Era Miasma Phase 1850-1880
Disease thought to be caused by breathing noxious vapors. Quarantine was the order of the day 38 states were teaching health in schools and over 35 textbooks were devoted specifically to health

Modern Era Bacteriology Phase Discovery that microorganisms caused disease – yet no cures or treatment found for many diseases. Physical education became mandatory in many schools and became a major in college. Medical inspections become mandatory in schools. Open-air classrooms became the rage.

Modern Era Health Resources Phase 1910-Present day 1910 – School Health becomes separate from Physical Education 1918 – Georgia Normal School offer first degree in Health Education 1918 – Health is recognized by US Gov’t as one of 7 educational objectives in schools
