What does it mean to be a citizen?
You have all of the rights that are protected and offered in the U.S. Constitution You have all the obligations (duties) and responsibilities of a U.S. Citizen You are a legally recognized member of a nation This is different from an “alien,” which is a person who is not a citizen of a nation or country

How is citizenship obtained?
Naturalization 1. Obtain a green card and live in the U.S. for 5 years 2. Complete the Application (Declaration of Intention) 3. Get fingerprinted to prove you are of good moral character 4. Interview with a USCIS agent and pass the citizenship test 5. Take the Oath of Allegiance Natural-Born (Native-born) Law of Blood Law of Soil

What are the duties and responsibilities of citizens?
Duty (obligation) – something a person is required to do by law They are mandatory! Responsibility – something a person should do
