What Qualifies A Student As Homeless?
Doubled-Up Hotel/Motel Trailer Park Campgrounds and Parks Temporary Foster Care Abandoned Building Shelters (ex: YWCA, Christian Aid) Vehicles

Warning Signs Lack of Continuity Poor Health/Nutrition Attendance and Transportation Issues Poor Hygience Lack of Privacy and Personal Space After-School Lagging Social/Behavioral Concerns Reactions and Statements from Parents or Child

What Funding is Available?
Federal Unfunded Mandate – Limited funding available through Title I dollars Intervention Specialists collaborate with Building Administrators and Community Agencies to utilize building or privately donated monies Supplies and Materials directly related to school School Fees Field Trip Expenses Transportation to and from school Food Services Limited After-School Tutoring

What Can You Do to Help These Children?
Be familiar with the characteristics Improve sensitivity Adjust assignments Enroll in food service program Ensure opportunity for inclusion in all activities Communicate with parents Connect with after-school tutoring programs Provide snacks Hold students accountable for learning Consider preparing a “new student” packet Introduce new students and assign buddy Connect with student who leaves with a note, picture, card Continue to connect with student by providing school contact information (business card)

What are the rights of these students?
These students have the right to… Immediate enrollment in school, even if lacking paperwork normally required for enrollment. Attend school in his/her school of origin (if this is required by the parent and is feasible) or in the school in the attendance area where the family or youth is currently residing. Receive transportation to his/her school of origin, if this is requested by the parent. Services comparable to those received by housed schoolmates (supplemental educational services) Attend school along with children not experiencing homelessness.
