1 receive class reminders!
“Douglas County's middle school gifted education program is multifaceted and includes a wide range of advanced content courses. In keeping with state guidelines and using Georgia's Performance Standards, the program's goal is to provide experiences that service the needs of the identified gifted students by strengthening the students' higher order thinking skills while nurturing their creative abilities. For all gifted content courses, the first priority for instruction is to meet regular Georgia Performance Standards. In addition, courses include greater emphasis on technology, research, and critical thinking. In developing the curriculum for each course, the overriding goal has been for gifted children to achieve in ways not always possible in the regular classroom.” --Corinne Barnes, Douglas County School System’s Gifted Program Director Douglas County follows Lucy Calkins’ Units of Study as the basis for our English Language Arts instruction. This Common Core based writer’s workshop consists of three units of study: narrative, argument, and information. Each unit incorporates reading and writing, which provides students with examples, as well as thought-provoking material to discuss in their own writing. There will be a total of three Common District Assessments (CDAs) over the course of the year, which will be their final writing pieces for each unit. Gifted students will be held to a higher standard, and therefore scored using a 9th grade rubric. eighth grade Gifted ENGLISH Language Arts Materials Needed Composition Notebook Glue Sticks Scissors Loose Leaf Paper-College Ruled Highlighters Pens/Pencils Colored Pencils/Markers Grading Supportive: Classwork, Homework, Participation (30%) Formative: Quizzes, Ticket Out, Warm-ups (30%) Summative: Tests, CDAs, Projects, AR (40%) .
