Human Body and Organ Systems
2
Digestive System What does it do? What are the main organs?
The main role of the digestive system is to breakdown and absorb nutrients that are necessary for growth and maintenance. What are the main organs? Mouth, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines.
3
Chewing Activity Saliva is an enzyme made in your mouth to aid in digestions. Iodine reacts with starch to turn a dark blue or purple color. Test a cracker for starch before and after contact with saliva
4
Background Important Info: The liquid solution has starch and sugar
Iodine reacts with starch to turn a dark blue or purple color. Starch gets broken down into simpler sugars. Simple sugars do not react with iodine to turn blue.
5
Respiratory System What does it do? What are the main organs?
The main role of the respiratory system is to provide gas exchange between the blood and the environment. Primarily, oxygen is absorbed from the atmosphere into the body and carbon dioxide is expelled from the body. What are the main organs? Nose, trachea and lungs.
6
Everyone Stand Up!!! Count the number of breaths that you take for 30 seconds. (Ms. H will keep time) Now exercise for 1 minute. . . Run in place, jumping jacks. . . Count your breaths again for another 30 seconds. Compare the numbers
7
Circulatory System What does it do?
The main role of the circulatory system is to transport nutrients, gases (such as oxygen and CO2), hormones and wastes through the body. What are the main organs? Heart, blood vessels and blood.
8
Arteries and Veins Most veins are blue Most Arteries are red
Why? Most Arteries are red Why Why doesn’t blood flow the wrong way ever? Valves in veins and arteries
9
Everyone Stand Up!!! Find your pulse
Count the number heart beats in 30 seconds. (Ms. H will keep time) Now exercise for 1 minute. . . Run in place, jumping jacks. . . Count your heart beats for another 30 seconds. Compare the numbers
10
Urinary System What does it do?
The main role of the urinary system is to dispose of dissolved waste molecules. The intestinal tract removes solid waste, the skin and lungs get rid of heat energy. What are the main organs? Kidneys, ureters, bladder, intestine. Skin is sometimes considered part of the urinary system.
11
Evaporative Cooling Alcohol evaporates at a lower
temperature than water Follow your teachers directions to show how temperature changes as evaporation takes place.
12
Immune System What does it do?
The main role of the immune system is to destroy and remove invading microbes and viruses from the body. What are the main organs? White blood cells, T- and B- cells.
14
Nervous System What does it do?
The main role of the nervous system is to relay electrical signals through the body. The nervous system directs behaviour and movement and, along with the endocrine system, controls physiological processes such as digestion, circulation, etc. What are the main organs? Brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves.
