Competitive Search Options
T&R Internal Department Only * University Only External Open to the Public * Department Only Without placement goal – non-tenure track positions may post “department only” with approval of dean and provost With placement goal – non-tenure track positions “department only” if potential applicant pool includes representation to achieve goal with approval of dean and provost Internal candidates must have been employed for at least two academic semesters (i.e., visiting assistant)

Job Change Reasons - Competitive
New Hire – hired through a competitive process into a benefited position. New to Virginia Tech. New position number. Rehire – hired into a benefited position through a competitive process after a break in service. New position number. Transfer Competitive – current Virginia Tech benefited employee hired into a different position through a competitive process. New position number. Pay may or may not change.

Job Change Reasons Non-Competitive
Promotion – current Virginia Tech benefited employee assumes new duties with higher-level responsibilities. Pay increase required. Non-competitive. New position number may be assigned. Reassignment – current Virginia Tech benefited employee moved to a different position based on operational needs. Non-competitive. New position number may be assigned. Pay may or may not change.

Competitive Process Department Only
Create/update the position description in PeopleAdmin Use ‘Department Only’ as the reason for the action Route action through PeopleAdmin for appropriate management approvals (see attached charts for more detail): Department head Senior management President/provost, if applicable Affirmative Action (Equity and Accessibility ) Posting is only viewable to applicants through a ‘private’ link to the posting, department responsible to communicate link TUP or TOFO and P3A-F required

Create/update the position description in PeopleAdmin Check ‘University Only’ within the posting Route action through PeopleAdmin for appropriate management approvals (see attached charts for more detail): Department head Senior management President/provost, if applicable Affirmative Action (Equity and Accessibility) Posting is viewable to all applicants on the employment site TUP or TOFO and P3A-F required

Update position description in PeopleAdmin using ‘Create a new PD’ or ‘Major Update’ Attach P3A-F to the online PD Attach candidate CV to the online PD Route action (with signed P3A-F & CV) through PeopleAdmin for appropriate online approvals (see attached charts for more detail): Department head Senior management Provost (president, as appropriate) Affirmative Action (Equity and Accessibility) Create TUP or TOFO, get appropriate signatures, and send to Human Resources
