18 The Trauma of Incarceration -Sometimes Violent Arrests -Strip Searches -Hand Cuffs/Shackles -Loss of Freedom, Identity, Choices -Fear of Long Term Prison Time -Fear of Raising Children Through Pictures A majority of inmates have trauma when they enter the correctional facility but then have additional trauma as a result of their incarceration

20 Definition of Trauma Our hearts can be wounded when we are overwhelmed with intense fear, helplessness, or horror. This is referred to as trauma. It can happen in the face of death, serious injury, rape or other forced sexual activity. Everybody has had bad things happen in their lives – crisis. What makes trauma different?

Largest Incarceration Rate in the World-2.2 million -95% released %-97% have untreated trauma 95% will be released There is not only the childhood trauma that most of those in our jails and prisons have experienced but then we layer on the trauma of incarceration. In addition% of those in our jails and prisons today will be released back into society

This glaring need of trauma sent us on a search of how to minister to that need with those that we works with

A Partnership was forged: Good News Jail & Prison Ministry American Bible Society’s Trauma Healing Institute The mission together is training chaplain and volunteers in trauma ministry and taking it into approximately 100 correctional facilitiites that have a GN chaplain in the United States
