2. For all pilots Don’t panic!
Don’t be afraid to confess that you are in trouble.
Check the weather before you depart.
Even if you intend navigating by GPS, always draw your plan on a paper map
Preplan your frequencies.
Align your DI and compass regularly

3. For all pilots
Make sure you know how to switch between Mode A, Mode C and Ident on your transponder
Squawk 7700 when you are in trouble.

4. For student pilots
Don’t wait until you’re almost out of fuel until you confess that you are in trouble.
Insist that your instructor double checks your planning before you depart
Try to give the ATC as much information as possible. Describe rivers, dams, big roads, ridges.

5. For instructors / flight schools
Don’t send students on cross countries when you know the DI is inaccurate or drifts more than expected.
Don’t send students on cross countries when you know the transponder is unserviceable.
Teach proper R/T!!!
Make copies of the student’s nav log before they depart
Teach navigation with the magnetic compass in case the DI is faulty

6. For ATC’s Slow down with your R/T
Consider placing the emergency aircraft on its own frequency
Ask other aircraft in his suspected vicinity of the prevailing weather conditions.
