4 Introduction of the Report
Help analyze the quantitative growth in the number of Internet users and usage rate as well as the qualitative growth in Internet usage patterns, and Internet usages in daily lives. Find out the similarities and differences of people’s usage behaviors of and attitudes towards the Internet among APIRA countries and regions. Look at the evolving usage patterns of the Internet users and the reasons of not using the Internet by those non-users with the longitudinal survey data in the long run. OBJECTIVES MEASUREMENTS A common questionnaires termed as the APIRA Core Question Template. Seventeen questions in total: Fourteen questions with indicators Three questions without indicators

Source: Internet World Stats ( (June 2012) Although the number of Internet users in Asia is top around the world, the Internet Adoption is rather low, only larger than that of Africa. There is plenty of room for Asia Internet development.

9 Asia Internet Adoption
World Internet penetration rate:34.3% Asia Internet penetration rate:27.5% *China: Users refers to "those have used the Internet in the previous six months". *Taiwan: Users refers to "those ever used and are still using the Internet". *Macau: Users refers to "those are currently using the Internet, excluding those ever used but no longer use anymore". *Korea: Users refers to "those who used the Internet in the last 1 year" *Malaysia: data from IDC 2012. The number of Internet users in Chinese Mainland is top but the adoption rate is rather low. The Internet adoption rate of Korea is highest among the four regions.

14.4% 26.1 % 34.9% Overall, the Internet adoption rates keep growing year by year from 2005 to 2012 in the three regions. Though the Internet adoption in Chinese Mainland is lowest, the growth is biggest.

12 Household Computers Macau gets the highest penetration rate (91.1%) of household computers. Followed by Taiwan (86.4%) and Korea (82.3%).

13 Connection Method of Accessing the Internet
The Broadband is the most frequently used connection method in all the regions except Macau. Korea has the highest rate in broadband, which reaches 100%. In Macau and Chinese mainland, the Broadband usage is relatively low and there are many people using other connection methods, such as Wi-Fi and 3G.

14 Device of Accessing the Internet
The Internet devices become more varied and Desk-top computer is no longer the most used device in most regions. In Chinese Mainland (74.5%), Macau (85.9%) and Korea (99.7%), mobile is the most used device for internet as compared with other devices.

15 Device of Accessing the Internet-Mobile Phone
The rate of mobile Internet penetration in the four regions keeps a rapid growth from 2005 to 2012. In Taiwan, there is a sharp increase of mobile Internet users in 2012 increasing from 33.7% in 2011 to 55.9% in 2012.

16 Places of Accessing the Internet
The majority of users usually get online at home in all different regions, and also there are more and more people using the Internet in other places. In Taiwan and Korea, there are more than 50% of users getting online in other places, such as airports, train stations and High-speed rail stations.

18 Composition of Internet Users by Gender
Among these five regions, male proportion of Internet users is larger than female except in Macau, whose female Internet users are equal to male. Especially in Malaysia, the male proportion is 56.4%, which is largest in all.

In Chinese Mainland and Malaysia, the largest group of Internet users is those who are age, which accounts for 32.1% and 35.5% respectively. In Taiwan, Macau and Korea, the largest age group of the Internet users is 25-34, which accounts for 22.9%, 22.1% and 35.5% respectively.

20 Composition of Internet Users by Educational Degree
The largest group of Internet users is high school/middle school degree in most regions except in Taiwan, whose largest Internet user group is bachelor/college degree, accounting for 50.7%.

In these five different regions, there are higher percentages of non-students as compared to that of students. Especially in Malaysia, the non-students proportion (81.6%) of Internet users is the highest.

On average, people have been getting online more than 8 years in all the three regions. Taiwan people get online even longer than other two regions, reaching 8.7 hours per week. The proportion of users who have used the Internet for 5 years and above is larger than other groups.

On average, users in China use the Internet 20.5 hours per week, which is the longest as compared to other two regions. Users in Macau and Korea use the Internet 20.3 and 15.2 hours per week respectively.

28 Adoption Divide by Gender
In all the four regions, the Internet adoption rate among males is higher than that among females, but the difference is not so much, which is less-than-10%.

The female Internet penetration rate is rising in all the three regions. The female Internet penetration rate in Chinese Mainland is lower than the other regions, but it keeps in a rapid growth.

30 Adoption Divide by Age Taiwan and Korea both have a high Internet adoption in all age groups (more than 75%) except those aged 55 and older. In Taiwan, all of ages use the Internet and in Korea, all of the 6-24 ages use the Internet. In Chinese mainland, people aged exhibits the highest adoption rate of the Internet as compared with other age group.

The higher the degree of education obtained, the higher the Internet adoption is. People with a master degree/above have the highest Internet adoption as compared to other education degree.

The Internet adoption rate among students is higher than that among non-students in all the four regions (Chinese Mainland, Taiwan, Macau and Korea). In Taiwan and Korea, all the students use the Internet and the adoption rate reaches 100%.

Males have a longer experience getting online than females in the three regions. Especially, in Taiwan, males have been online for 8.9 years which is highest among the three regions.

In Taiwan, Macau and Korea, people who aged between 25 and 34 have the longest online experience as compared to other age groups, which are 9.8, 10.6 and 9.9 years respectively.

The higher the degree of education obtained, the longer the online experience in the three regions. In Korea, people with a master or above degree get the longest online experience, which is 13.3 years.

The non-students have more online experience than students in the three regions. The non-students in Taiwan (9.1 years) get longer online experience than that of other regions.

The percentage of males getting information online is higher than that of female in Taiwan While in Macau and Korea, the percentage of females getting information online is higher than that of males.

In Chinese Mainland and Korea, the percentage of males getting online for communication by text is higher than that of females. However, in Taiwan and Macau, the percentage of females getting online for communication by text is higher than that of males.

The percentage of males getting online for leisure is higher than that of females in all the regions. The percentage of Internet users getting online for Leisure in Chinese Mainland is much higher than other three regions.

When answering the question “How do you trust the Internet?”: 55.3 % Internet users in Taiwan answer “Affirmative”. In Macau, there is a relatively high proportion giving an “Average” answer, 71.7%.
