Goals To define Neuroplasticity and its contents
The role of Neuroplasticity in physical and mental health How water sports can enhance Neuroplasticity and healthy living
3
Neuroplasticity Research supports Intensity Repetition Salience
“The brain's ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections throughout life. Neuroplasticity allows the neurons (nerve cells) in the brain to compensate for injury and disease and to adjust their activities in response to new situations or to changes in their environment.” Research supports Intensity Repetition Salience
4
Neuroplasticity
5
Salience The most overlooked piece of the puzzle
Doing what matters to each individual Strong desire, creates environment for change Patient must attend to the task for plasticity to occur They must value the task and be motivated to perform the same task Considerations: We are more resilient, the younger we are; the sooner rehab begins in the patient’s care, the sooner we can make plastic changes in the brain to prevent functional loss and also reduce the risk of compensatory strategies from having stronger pathways in the brain than the desired movement.
6
Motor Recovery Repeated movements for specific task completion
Specific movements increased representation in motor cortex (Animal studies) Unspecific movements did not Nudo 2001 Constraint Induced Movement Therapy Increased hand representation in patients post stroke Sawaki, 2008

Potential Benefits Prevention of Downward Spiral Sedentary lifestyle
Psychosocial Benefits Support groups Ability to do new activities Improved self esteem Physical Benefits Improves muscle control Improves balance Salience to activity causes improved functional gain!
