I. Extensible Metadata: Dublin Core & OAI
Source digital object in OAI-compliant digital repository. We’ll use the keywords, “keystone,” “bridge,” “webster,” “dudley,” sampled from this record in a few searches in different locations to illustrate the extensibility of Dublin Core through OAI…

I. Extensible Metadata: Dublin Core & OAI
Digital Commonwealth is a portal that harvests member repositories through OAI. Setup required? Harvester needs to know the harvested repository’s base OAI URL. In this case: Results? Intelligent exposure of metadata and access to source digital object.

I. Extensible Metadata: Dublin Core & OAI
OAIster, is also a portal that harvests OAI-compliant repositories except on an international scale. Again, setup is easily accomplished by pointing harvester to the repository’s base URL. Again, this results in accurate resource discovery based upon the same set of keywords as previous search.

I. Extensible Metadata: Dublin Core & OAI
WorldCat: In this instance, Dublin Core has to be manually mapped to MARC, then harvested by OCLC. This involves more work than straight Dublin Core OAI automated harvesting.

I. Extensible Metadata: Dublin Core & OAI
C/W MARS OPAC. For this to work crosswalked MARC records need to be downloaded from OCLC, then loaded into consortium ILS server.
7
I. Extensible Metadata: Dublin Core & Google Indexing
Google bots automatically index digital repository’s Dublin Core records. Results? Direct hits on the original digital object.
8
II. Extensible Metadata: Web Services
Original resource in Internet Archive: a University of Connecticut Spanish periodical captured locally, then uploaded with metadata to IA.

II. Extensible Metadata: Web Services
Here, text tab search box is powered by JavaScript and an HTML search form that leverages the Internet Archive’s advanced search URL syntax…

II. Extensible Metadata: Web Services
The guts of the text tab search box: powered by a small bit of JavaScript and an HTML search form that leverages the Internet Archive’s advanced search URL syntax…

II. Extensible Metadata: Web Services
Sample search fed to Internet Archive through the following URL which plays nice with their particular syntax:

II. Extensible Metadata: Web Services & Google Indexing
Google, of course, indexes the web through their automated bots to produce accurate digital object-level results.
