1 ORGANIZING A SPEECH Lesson 02

3 01. Know your audience and your purpose
Inform? Persuade? Entertain? Inspire?

4 You are able to write it in one sentence.
02. Know your message You are able to write it in one sentence.

5 03. Brainstorm: part 1 Idea Collection
Write down ideas quickly related to your topic, order doesn't matter. This should take you no longer than five (5) minutes.

6 04. Brainstorm: Part 2 Preliminary Research
Use outside resources (internet/books) to collect and write down more possible ideas. This should take you no longer than twenty (20) to thirty (30) minutes.

7 05. Idea grouping On the idea collection sheets, group related ideas using different colored highlighters or different symbols.

8 06. Mind map Using your idea collection sheets, with your main topic in the center. Use color, pictures, and lots of space! Show connections! TOPIC

9 07. Pick your best points Given the time you have to speak, your audience, and your purpose.

10 08. Do more research Only if needed.

11 09. Write speech outline Opening: Get the audience’s attention and lead into topic. Body: Each point must be related to topic and supported. Conclusion: Review and end with a call to action or memorable statement. Tie into your opening, if possible. (Complete the Circle)

In addition to organizing by topic, you can organize chronologically, cause/effect, compare/contrast, or problem/solution. Support your points with facts, stories, memorable images, use of props, or visual aids. Some ways to being (and end a speech): quotes, stories, attention-getting statements.

13 10. Write out your speech word-for-word, but remember to write it for the “ear”
Use short sentences and simple language. Pay attention to transitions between sections.

Support your points with facts, stories, examples, and visual aids

17 Sample student outline (conclusion)
