1 Smart Grids and Complexity
Please use the dd month yyyy format for the date for example 11 January The main title can be one or two lines long. Professor Jacek Brodzki Mathematics, University of Southampton SIMM Southampton Initiative in Mathematical Modelling 1

2 SIMM Southampton Initiative in Mathematical Modelling
Funded in 2009 to create a new research platform to unify modelling activities and expertise in Pure and Applied Mathematics, Statistics and OR SIMM brings together about 40 staff members across all the disciplines, and about 25 postdocs and PhD students SIMM activities are supported by EPSRC (about £1.5M in grants since 2010) and comprise a varied portfolio of projects in energy, networks, modern data analysis An important part of SIMM’s activities is complexity research

3 Smart grids as complex networks
The functional structure of the grid depends on the scale at which it is viewed An exciting challenge in complexity research Regular graphs Random graphs

4 Scale-dependent analysis
Various features of the grid come into focus as the scale of observation changes from large scale (a whole country or even continent) to small scale-single towns, streets, or even individual homes.

5 Smart grids as sensor networks Global information from local data
Sensor placement Network coverage Modern discrete mathematics Applied topology Modern statistics
