1
Energy: Waves How does energy travel?
2
Get the sheet from the desk and answer the following question with a neighbor.
What does light, sound and earthquakes all have in common? They transfer energy in the form of a wave.
3
What is wave motion? A form of carrying energy
4
How does the motion of a wave begin?
Vibrations in materials set up wavelike disturbances that spread away from the source.
5
What is a medium? Any substance that a wave travels through.
6
What are the two classes of waves?
MECHANICAL Waves that travel through a medium Ex. Sound and seismic waves ELECTROMAGNETIC Waves that do not need a medium to travel. Ex. light, microwaves, x- rays
7
What are the parts of a wave?
Crest- highest point on a wave. Troughs- lowest point on a wave. Amplitude- the height from the line of origin to a crest or trough Wavelength- distance between two corresponding points on a wave.
8
Diagram of a wave
9
What is frequency? The number of waves that crosses a given point in a given time. Measured in Hertz Lowest Frequency Highest Frequency
10
What is the speed of a wave?
Frequency x wavelength = wave speed
11
What is a transverse wave?
The motion of the medium is perpendicular to the motion of the wave. ex light waves
12
What is a longitudinal wave?
The motion of the medium is parallel to the motion of a wave. ex. sound waves

15
What about Earthquakes?
Earthquakes are vibrations in the earth that release the (potential) energy stored in rocks. Earthquakes create seismic waves.

Today we will be watching Bill Nye to learn more about Waves
Today we will be watching Bill Nye to learn more about Waves. Get the sheet from the desk. Begin the crossword puzzle on the back. You may use your notes. Also, get out your Venn diagram from yesterday for us to finish checking.
17
Day Three Label the anatomy of the wave (yes you have to draw the wave)
18
Get the sheet from the desk
Get the sheet from the desk. Answer the following question with a neighbor. Compare the two waves. Use the words frequency, wavelength and amplitude in your response.
