Explore! On your table, there are several different minerals that I collected throughout the year. I realized I had a large collection and thought it was best to group (classify) them so I could keep track of them. The problem was, I had so many of them, I didn't know where to begin so I am going to ask you to help me. Before we do that next week, we need to determine what a mineral is. I want you to gently pass around the minerals, observe the minerals, and discuss what characteristics you think a mineral must have in order to be considered a mineral. Write your answer on post-it note.

Properties of Minerals
What properties must a mineral have?
4
What is a mineral? Properties:
Solid Naturally Occurring (not man made) Inorganic Fixed composition Crystal Form
5
Pg. #7: Properties of Minerals & Rocks
How are minerals related to rocks? (2 lines)
6
What is a mineral? Mineral: A naturally occurring, inorganic solid that has a crystal structure and definite chemical composition
7
Minerals and Rocks
8
What are the properties of a mineral?
1. Inorganic: Not formed from living things or the remains of living things
9
INORGANIC. Rocks are not alive and never were!
ORGANIC. Horses are alive, breathing and active.
10
What are the properties of a mineral?
2. Formed in nature: Not manufactured or artificially made Is glass a mineral? Is a diamond a mineral?
11
What are the properties of a mineral?
3. Solid: Has definite volume and shape. Is water a mineral? Is ice a mineral?
12
What are the properties of a mineral?
4. Definite Chemical Composition Has same (definite) chemical make up (composition) no matter where you break it. Example: Salt= Chlorine & Sodium Atoms
14
5. Crystal Structure: Atoms are joined in a repeating, 3-D pattern
Diamond and graphite have same chemical makeup (carbon) but different crystal structures
16
How are minerals related to rocks?
How are minerals related to rocks? Minerals make-up rocks (rocks are made of minerals).
17
Is it a mineral? In groups, go through the properties of a mineral and check each property the at the mineral has and an x if it does not have that property. If it has all properties, it is a mineral. Solid Inorganic Naturally made Definite chemical composition Crystal Structure
