Final (Exam) Project 6th Grade Language Arts
PRESENTATIONS BEGIN ON FRIDAY, May 19
2
CHAPTERS 9 AND 10 OF DRAGONWINGS
In Chapter 9 of our novel, it is 13 days after the Feast of Pure Brightness when the massive San Francisco earthquake of 1906 happens. Afterwards, Moon Shadow and his father see the damage, and some survivors. Miss Whitlaw and Robin appear, and they start to help rescue buried survivors. By lunchtime, they have saved 20 people. The narrator explains – from the future - that the fire that begins to blaze is known historically as the ‘ham and eggs’ fire (Don’t use your stove after an earthquake.). Moon Shadow sees looting taking place. The narrator – in the present – confirms that Miss Whitlaw’s house will burn in the ‘ham and eggs’ fire that night. Chapter 10 of our novel continues to share the historical aspects of the earthquake and the fire that followed, as well as what happens to Moon Shadow and the other characters in the novel.

YOUR FINAL (EXAM) PROJECT
What is the project? Your project is to create a power point. You will choose from several topic choices. Please take notes on the following slides. Write down any topic ideas or suggestions that you like. You can always narrow your choice to one, later on. Afterwards, you will have an opportunity to reflect on your favorite topics.
6
CHOICE 1 CHRONICLE THE EARTHQUAKE
Think like a newspaper reporter. Analyze the WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHY, AND HOW of the San Francisco earthquake (and the fire that followed) of 1906.
7
CHOICE 2 EXPLAIN HOW THE EARTHQUAKE AFFECTED THE LIVES OF A REAL PERSON/FAMILY OF 1906.
This will be a challenging one. You will need to research real people who were living in San Francisco at the time. This project will be similar to Choice 1, in that you will still answer the ‘5 W’s’ and also tell ‘How’ they were affected. Note: If not enough information is available on one person or family, you could include short discussions on 3-4 real-life stories.
8
CHOICE 3 THE DEVASTATION OF THE EARTHQUAKE AND THE FIRE
This project will be about the destruction caused by the earthquake, and the fire that followed. Again, follow the 5 W’s/How rule. Think like a newspaper reporter. Areas of focus: *WHAT was damaged by the earthquake/fire? *HOW much was lost (monetary losses)? *Human lives lost. *Real estate/land damaged.
9
CHOICE 4 DESCRIBE MOON SHADOW’S EXPERIENCE DURING, AND AFTER, THE EARTHQUAKE AND FIRE
Use Chapters 9 and 10 to describe Moon Shadow’s experiences during the earthquake and the fire that followed. *HOW was he affected? *WHO was with him? *WHAT happened afterwards?
10
CHOICE 5 HOW DID THE PEOPLE OF THE CITY OF SAN FRANCISCO RECOVER FROM THE EARTHQUAKE AND FIRE?
The project title is pretty self-explanatory. Your research will focus on facts explaining how the city of San Francisco, and the people who lived there, recovered from the disaster. Think about: *WHO paid for the recovery? *WHERE did the recovery begin? *WHAT was rebuilt, and WHEN? *Is San Francisco still affected, today?
11
CHOICE 6 WHAT ARE EARTHQUAKES?
This may be just the project for you, if you are a science buff. You will discuss the scientific aspects of the earthquake: *WHAT causes them? *WHAT are faults? *WHAT can be done to warn people about earthquakes? *WHERE do they occur, most often? *WHAT happens during an earthquake? *WHEN do they occur? *WHERE/WHEN was the biggest documented earthquake?
12
EXPLORE A TOPIC Now that we have discussed your choices, use the “Explore A Topic” document to reflect on our class conversation, and a possible choice of topic. Write a brief account of the class conversation about the topic, describing what you know at this point about some of its aspects: In our class conversation we discussed __________________________. What I have learned so far is _________________________.
13
POTENTIAL AREAS OF INVESTIGATION
“In a few words, describe an area within the topic that you would like to know more about:” An aspect of the topic I would like to know more about is _____. (THINK: Which project choice do you want to pursue?) “Explain why you are interested in this area of the topic:” I am interested in this area because _____________________. “Express your potential area of investigation as a question or problem: (THINK: This is a prompt for the assignment. This is your ESSENTIAL QUESTION- the question that will be answered by your project.) Examples: What are the events leading up to, during, and after the San Francisco earthquake of 1906? What are earthquakes?
14
RESEARCH After you have your essential question, it is time to begin your research. What you research is dependent upon your chosen topic. There is a lot of information out there on the internet. Your goal is to find as many facts as you can that could be used to answer your essential question. Your goal is to record helpful facts and data that could be used to answer your essential question. You must also write down your sources: *title/author of web page (sometimes at the bottom of the page) *website address
