What is a mineral? A naturally occurring, inorganic solid that has a crystal structure and a definite chemical composition. TRANSLATION: it is not made by man, it was never alive, it is a solid and its particles form a repeating pattern. It is always made of the same stuff!

Gems vs. Gemstones A gemstone- a mineral, rock, or organic material that is used for jewelry or art. A gem- is a type of gemstone that must be cut or polished for its beauty to be visible. EVERYTHING is a gemstone. If it needs to be “prettied up”- it’s a gem. Question: Which are minerals?

How is it different from a rock?
A mineral is a pure substance. A rock is a mixture of 2+ minerals fused or cemented together. There are three types of rocks: igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary.
