TERMINAL PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE
The participant shall implement the seven steps for recruiting a new unit leader. CHEHAW COUNCIL

ENABLING OBJECTIVES Identify positions within your unit that need to be filled. Identify source materials for job descriptions for leadership positions within your unit. Describe the Seven Step Method for recruiting quality leaders. Demonstrate the process for scheduling an appointment with a prospective leader. When we recruit new leaders we often use one of two methods: Thinking of everyone we know who might fit the bill Hoping new Scout joins & family member volunteers Problem with these methods: Do not fill unit’s leadership needs We recruit people not ideal match for position CHEHAW COUNCIL

Recruits will want to know: Their responsibilities Your expectations for them Having answers to those questions avoid a common problem: A group of leaders with no specific tasks will do exactly what they are asked to do - nothing CHEHAW COUNCIL 8

Selection process begins with meeting of: Chartered Organization Rep Pack/Troop/Crew Committee Chair Unit Commissioner Their job is to: Define characteristics they want in new unit leader Select steering committee from Group Committee 13 CHEHAW COUNCIL

District Executive: Can provide support materials Can share recruiting techniques & other information Chartered Organization Rep: Has ultimate responsibility for selecting/approving Group leadership Appoints steering committee to recruit new leaders. 14 CHEHAW COUNCIL

Committee members will: See Part 1 of Selecting Quality Leaders video Develop list of prospects Committee members choose prospects that live up to values of Scout Oath & Law Do not assume whether prospects will accept or have time Potential leaders need opportunity to make own decision CHEHAW COUNCIL 17

Next, Steering Committee: Approves & ranks prospects Prioritizes top three in preferential order Submits list to head of Chartered Organization for approval before contacting propects Reviews Part 2 of Selecting Quality Leaders video CHEHAW COUNCIL 18

Steering Committee members should be prepared with answers to possible objections the prospect might raise during their visit. CHEHAW COUNCIL 19

Contact should be made by a member of the Steering Committee who is also personally acquainted with the prospect. 21 CHEHAW COUNCIL

Appointment can be made over telephone Do not try to recruit prospect in initial call Objective is to set time & place to meet Preferably at prospects home Let prospect know their spouse is welcome Confirm time & place with other Committee members 22 CHEHAW COUNCIL

If the prospect questions the purpose of the meeting frankly state that it is to discuss a matter important to the youth of the community. 23 CHEHAW COUNCIL

Appointment call sets stage to ask prospect to accept leadership role Be positive & encouraging Confirm date, time & location of meeting Record it on Recruitment Worksheet CHEHAW COUNCIL 24

Ask prospect to serve in desired position Tell prospect that he/she is top choice for this important position Thank prospects/spouses for their time 29 CHEHAW COUNCIL

If top prospect cannot accept, repeat process with #2 prospect Do not be discouraged if prospect turns you down If you exhaust your list of prospects, start process over CHEHAW COUNCIL 30

If applicant has lived in community 3+ years & is known to Committee: Obtain appropriate signatures If applicant is new to area or unknown to Committee: Check references Confirm Scouting experience 34 CHEHAW COUNCIL

Introduce yourself & explain purpose of call Ask how long reference has known prospect & what kind of relationship they have Ask how prospect’s positive attributes could help in leadership role Ask for personal observations, especially interacting with youth CHEHAW COUNCIL 35

Ask if prospect has any qualities or behaviors related to youth that should cause concern Ask reference if they would feel comfortable with prospect supervising their own child Thank references for their assistance 36 CHEHAW COUNCIL

Once the prospect has accepted the position & been approved as a leader, the Chartered Organization Rep should personally send a welcome letter. CHEHAW COUNCIL 40
