2 Evolution of the Internet
See networking in four distinct waves, each phase with a more profound effect on business and society. 4 Phases: Connectivity - Digitize Access To Information Networked Economy - Digitize Business Processes Immersive Experiences - Digitize Interactions (Business & Social) Internet of Everything - Digitize the Word Each phase built on the previous one… to create more value for businesses, governments and society in general. The first phase – maybe 20 years ago – was the connectivity phase – just getting connected to the online world was miracle enough. A lot of people here helped create the next wave – the Networked Economy, which was characterized by the development of things like eCommerce and digitally connected supply chain That’s when the value of analytics peaked. Connecting unconnected – consolidating OSI stack The phase we are in now is the Immersive Experiences– dominated by things like Social Media, collaboration and widespread mobility on a variety of devices. So the current phase is about digitizing the interactions, the next phase is about connecting the 99.4% of objects that were previously unconnected, and this is primarily Things. We’re going to digitize the remainder of society’s nervous system to the point that some philosophers are talking about a singularity But, as we’ve talked about in conjunction with the brand campaign launch… we are also entering into a new phase – the Internet of Everything wave – where there’s intelligence everywhere. It is immersive and will enable things we never dreamt were possible. 99% of things are unconnected. The next phase is about connecting people, process, data and things.

3 Takeaways: Internet of Things is the next evolution of the Internet, and it will make amazing things happen. Cisco is THE leader in the Internet of Things: it is bubbling up from multiple, diverse industries, but all of them have Cisco in common. Cisco is already at the forefront in creating real solutions today, turning vision into reality.

4 The World is Changing… again… The only constant is change
Over the past six years business demands for productivity, increasing globalisation and the consumerization of IT have changed dramatically There has been a rapid evolution in the technology responses implemented to meet business demands. And all these changes can be summed up in four major technology transitions (Mobility with Video, Cloud, all leading to a new breed of applications, and the Internet of Things with machine to machine connections and automated contextual decision making What does this all mean? And how does it affect business today? For organizations of all sizes, this means new growth opportunities with advances in productivity Companies and organizations are being faced with the demand for technology as a service inside the Enterprise. Employees want the ability to access any application, any time, anywhere – from the device of their choice. It means employees are demanding the same technology experience expectations in their workplace that they have in their personal lives (Amazon.com, Online banking, etc.) And the emergence of new business models Increasing expectations from users around the world with security, regulation and compliance requirements Technology responses start with Technology Architectures that enable security, flexibility, speed and scale for the business Together, this changing world results in increasing expectations of IT to accommodate the technology transitions while dealing with the business implications that we are all faced with

5 To better understand this definition, we must first break down IoE’s individual components.
People: As the Internet evolves toward IoE, we will be connected in more relevant and valuable ways. Today, most people connect to the Internet through their use of devices (such as PCs, tablets, TVs, and smartphones) and social networks such as Facebook. In the future, people will be able to swallow a pill that senses and reports the health of their digestive tract to a doctor over a secure Internet connection. In addition, sensors placed on the skin or sewn into clothing will provide information about a person’s vital signs. According to Gartner, people themselves will become nodes on the Internet, with both static information and a constantly emitting activity system. Process: Process plays an important role in how each of these entities — people, data, and things — works with the others to deliver value in the connected world of IoE. With the correct process, connections become relevant and add value because the right information is delivered to the right person at the right time in the appropriate way. Data: With IoT, devices typically gather data and stream it over the Internet to a central source, where it is analyzed and processed. As the capabilities of things connected to the Internet continue to advance, they will become more intelligent by combining data into more useful information. Rather than just reporting raw data, connected things will soon send higher-level information back to machines, computers, and people for further evaluation and decision making. This transformation from data to information in IoE is important because it will allow us to make faster, more intelligent decisions, as well as control our environment more effectively. Things: This group is made up of physical items like sensors (e.g. pressure, radio activity, image, temperature, vibration), consumer devices, enterprise assets that are connected to both the Internet and each other, RFID (a simple tag that can used to identify an object) and "actuator". An actuator is an object that makes an "action": for example, it could turn off an engine, a light, or start a process to control a more complex system. In IoE, these things will sense more data, become context-aware, and provide more experiential information to help people and machines make more relevant and valuable decisions. Examples of “things” in IoE include smart sensors built into structures like bridges, and disposable sensors that will be placed on everyday items such as milk cartons.
