REALIZING WHERE WE ARE WALKING The world has always been a sinful shameless place where evil is elevated and godliness is rejected Today we live in a culture where, now, via mass media, sinful behavior can be photographed, digitized, and published openly The difference with traditional media and social networking is social interactivity. In essence it is a “real” relationship via the virtual world #relatable

“walk as children of light” Paul uses four commands in our text to guide the Christian in his efforts to “mimic” God vs. 2 - Walk in love - agape a love that seeks good in and for others vs. 8 - Walk as children of light - having been born of the light (Jn 8:12, 12:36,46) the child of God takes on the character of the light (Matt 5:14-16) vs Reprove the works of darkness - more than mere abstinence “to convict, refute, confute (overwhelm in argument) vs Walk circumspectly - in a careful and deliberate manner, taking care how we represent the name we wear in a world hostile to God “reprove the darkness” “walk circumspectly”

Ephesians 5 has an interesting focus, while it certainly deals with the lives and actions of Christians there is an “outward” focus How do our choices and actions reflect on our God and effect the lost around us? Col 4:5-6 offers commentary on Eph 5: We must be wise in our interactions with the unredeemed Walking as children of light, i.e. modifying our conduct according to the character of the Gospel bears tangible fruit righteousness truth

Ephesians 5:3 an expression of humility an issue of the heart MODEST – “Respectable; honorable” (Arndt and Gingrich, 445).”Well-arranged; seemly” (Thayer, 356). “Orderly; well arranged; decent” (Vine, III: 79). “The well- ordering is not of dress and demeanor only, but the inner life’s uttering indeed, and expressing itself in the outward conversation” (Trench’s Syn. 346) SHAMEFASTNESS – “A sense of shame or honor, modesty, bashfulness, reverence, regard for others, respect” - “A sense of shame…prominently objective in its reference, having regard for others, a sense of shame…modesty rooted in character” (Vine, IV:17; Thayer, 14 SOBRIETY – “Soundness of mind... ‘sound judgment’ practically expresses the meaning; ‘it is that habitual inner self- government, with its constant rein on all the passions and desires which would hinder the temptation to these from arising....” (Vines, Vol. IV, pp ). “Soundness of mind, i.e.(lit,) sanity or (fig.) self- control” (Strong’s, # 4997) GODLINESS – “Denotes the fear or reverence of God…” (Vines, Vol. II, p. 162). “Devoutness, i.e. piety” (Strong’s, # 2317). Darby: “profession of the fear of God”, NIV: “profess to worship God” an element of character
