1 AIM: How did the Tang, Song and Yuan Dynasties impact Classical China?

2 Rise of the Three Dynasties
Tang Dynasty Song Dynasty Yuan Dynasty The Sui dynasty collapsed, the first emperor in Tang Dynasty, Tai-tsung took over the power, which he claimed to receive the mandate of Heaven. Tang dynasty developed while gaining power and wealth. The fall of the large Tang Empire. Song dynasty rulers was marked by solidity, advances in technological and industrial fields. Kublai Khan gained control of all China in 1279 after defeating the Song dynasty.

3 Content Vocabulary Pagoda: A temple or sacred building built by Chinese Buddhists, meant to house sacred objects such as gold treasures, books of Buddhist prayers, and pictures of the Buddha. Foot Binding: The practice of tightly binding the feet of young girls to keep the feet as small as possible. Started during the Tang Dynasty and became popular during the Song Dynasty. Landscape Paintings: Paintings that depict nature, such as mountains, hills, forests, bodies of water, etc. Started in Ancient China during the Tang Dynasty and continued on into the Song Dynasty. It fell out of practice during the Yuan Dynasty, but picked up again after the fall of that Dynasty.

Tang dynasty(618 – 907) Golden age in China Was the second largest and longest- enduring empire in the region Song dynasty( )  Part two of Golden Age Northern Song ( ) & Southern Song( ). Yuan dynasty( ) Foreign leader (Grandson of Genghis Khan). First time China was under complete foreign rule. Largest empire in the history of China

5 Governments of the Three Dynasties
Tang Song Yuan After South allied with Mongols, Mongols took over Famous ruler in Kublai Khan, grandson of Genghis Khan First nation to use paper money Didn’t trust natives and put Muslims and other foreigners in control Class structure established with ruler clan at the top Used brute force to take over previous dynasty Monarchy Famous ruler in emperor Taizong Religious tolerance was spread throughout the whole dynasty Confucianism was used all over the country Used mandate from heaven to obtain power Monarchy North Song & South Song ruled about equal amount of time North fell due to constant wars with outside enemies South allied with Mongols Confucianism was more favored than everything else

6 Achievements of the Tang Dynasty
Clockwork Escapement This was a device in mechanical watches and clocks which transfers energy to the clock’s timekeeping element and allows the number of its oscillations to be counted. Medicine The Tang dynasty was the first to successfully treat goiters using thyroid glands of sheep and pigs which was later used by the west in 1890 Printing technique Woodblock printing was the most dominant way of printing and led to the inventions of the playing cards.

7 Achievements of The Song Dynasty
Banknotes The Song government was the first ever government to issue banknotes. Banknotes were a type of currency made out of woodblock. It was the world’s earliest true paper money. Compass The compass allowed navigation in the sea far from the shore and was a major step in the history of navigation. It also would later contribute to the Age of discoveries. Movable Type Printing This system of printing was made by Bi Sheng and impacted education in China in a positive way. It allowed the mass production of books which led to to the expansion in the educated class in China.

8 Achievements of the Yuan Dynasty
Literature The Yuan Dynasty developed two types of literature which were drama and and the novel. They had many works of theatrical writing and fictional literature. Calendar An astronomer named Guo Shujing made the most accurate and reliable calendar which marked a year to have days. His calendar was used for 363 years the longest in Chinese history. Landscape painting Painting was dominated by the Four Masters(Huang Gongwang, Ni Zan, Wang Meng, and Wu Zhen).they used many techniques such as the brushstroke technique while doing landscape painting which was more concerned on the understanding of the painting rather than the visual appearance.

9 Fall of the Three Dynasties
Tang Dynasty Song Dynasty Yuan Dynasty Corruption of government Different class started having conflicts with each other. This led to the civil war which resulted the Tang Dynasty to fall and collapse. Being allies with the Mongols. Unsuccessful attack on the Jin Empire. After the death of Kublai Khan. Yuan Dynasty slowly began their downfall until 1368 when it was overthrown by Zhu Yuanzhang.

10 Guided Practice + Learning Activity
With a group: You will have to chose between a ruler (Emperor Taizong or Kublai Khan) and you must state why they were more influential than the other. This must be done on the poster.
